The nearby area of Altea la Vella offers a variety of local restaurants and shops where you can purchase fresh produce to enjoy back at the villa. For a more vibrant scene, head just 20 minutes north along the coast to the lively town of Calpe. Distinguished by the monumental Penon de Ifach mountain, Calpe’s landscape is both unique and historic, dating back to the Valencian Bronze Age. You can hike to the summit of Penon de Ifach, passing through a tunnel that cuts through the rock, to enjoy stunning views over the bay and surrounding coastline. At the base of the rock, Calpe’s active fishing port is a fascinating place to watch the daily catch come in and experience the evening fish auction. Nearby, local restaurants and bars offer the perfect setting for an aperitif or a classic dish of paella or fresh seafood.
Calpe also boasts several beautiful beaches ideal for a day by the sea. The central Playa del Arenal Bol is a popular swimming spot with its long stretch of white sand and clear blue waters. A lively promenade lined with bars and restaurants invites you to enjoy a relaxing lunch with sea views. To the north, the Ruta Ecologica Benissa is a scenic coastal path that connects various bays and hidden coves. This accessible trail allows you to wander along the cliff tops or descend to secluded beaches for a swim. The picturesque Cala de la Fustera, nestled between rocky cliffs, offers a quiet bay with fine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Spend the day at the beach or snorkel to discover the rich posidonia seagrass beds. For refreshments, the Mandala Beach Bar at the back of the beach serves cold drinks and tapas with a beautiful sea view.
A 15-minute drive to the south, the charming Spanish town of Altea awaits. Explore the Casco Antiguo, the old quarter, where cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses and Moorish architecture create a picturesque setting. Visit the Plaça de l’Església to admire the striking white and blue domed church, and relax on a sunny terrace with an aperitif, soaking up the laid-back ambiance. Carrer Major is home to artisan boutiques and galleries where you can browse local crafts. On Tuesdays, don’t miss the street market on Calle Filarmonica, where you can stroll among stalls of fresh produce and perhaps pick up something delicious to enjoy back at the villa.
To the south of Altea’s beaches, the bay curves out to the Sierra Helada natural park. With its 300-meter-high cliffs, the park offers adventurous trails that explore the coastline and its rich marine flora and fauna. A well-signposted path leads to the Albir lighthouse, perched at one end of the park. Built in 1863, the lighthouse provides a splendid perspective with panoramic views up and down the coast.
