Calella de Palafrugell for fishing boats and evening life, Llafranc for its sandy bay and lighthouse, Tamariu for a quiet cove in the pines, and the town itself for markets and Catalan everyday life.
Three coves, each with its own temper
Calella de Palafrugell is the old fishing village: whitewashed houses, boats pulled up on small linked beaches and arcaded fishermen's houses at Port Bo. Beyond the last cove, at Cap Roig, a Russian colonel and his English wife spent decades building a castle and botanical gardens above the sea.
Llafranc, a short walk north on the Camí de Ronda, has a curved sandy bay, a small marina and the Sant Sebastià lighthouse on the headland above. Tamariu, further north again, is the quietest of the three, a small cove backed by pine woods, with a handful of restaurants on the water and clear water for snorkelling.

Cork, Josep Pla and the Sunday market
Palafrugell itself is the part visitors often skip, and they shouldn't. The Museu del Suro, set in an old modernista cork factory, tells the story of the industry that built the town, and it is open on Sunday mornings, so it pairs well with the weekly market. The Fundació Josep Pla is dedicated to the writer, Catalonia's great chronicler of this coast.

Havaneres, suquet and a September swim
On the first Saturday of July, Calella hosts the Cantada d'Havaneres, sea shanties with Cuban roots sung in Port Bo square since the late 1960s, with cremat, flaming rum with coffee and cinnamon, passed round. In July and August, the Cap Roig Festival brings international names to an open-air stage in the gardens.
