This depends on the destination. For the French Riviera, Provence, Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast and the Greek islands, June and September offer the best combination of warm weather, calm seas and fewer crowds than the peak July–August period. For the Algarve and southern Spain, May through October is reliably warm. For ski chalets in the French Alps, Switzerland and Austria, mid-January through March offers the best snow and longest days. The UK and Ireland are at their most beautiful from April through September. We recommend booking 6–12 months ahead for the most sought-after properties in peak season.
