A true retreat from the stresses of daily life, this magical place will appeal to lovers of the great outdoors, with awesome views, wonderful wildlife and some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen. At the top of a steep hill, the home overlooks a cavernous valley with a reservoir at the bottom and there are loads of hiking trails to choose from nearby (plus we recommend the trails at Lake Poway, just a twenty-minute drive away). It’s quite an adventurous uphill drive to reach it but from up here you’ll feel as though you’re at the top of the world, in a private, remote setting. The home itself is beautifully styled, with two cosy living rooms, a huge kitchen that comes fully stocked with everything you’ll need to cook, and a games room. The bedrooms are calming and stylish, with touches of boho chic, and we just love the log burner in the big master bedroom. But it’s outside where the magic happens, with a big terrace that boasts incredible views. Jump in the pool after a long hike, take some time out on the ‘meditation boulder’, then freshen up and get the grill station ready for a barbecue feast as the sun sets.

*The hosts recommend you arrive in daylight because the long track up to the house is rugged, to say the least, with steep drop-offs in places – use caution
*You’ll have complete privacy but the owners live in a separate building close by
*There are animals (both wild and domesticated) in the area – the owners have friendly dogs, ducks and hens, while it’s not unheard of to spot bobcats, wild rabbits and occasional snakes
*A handyman visits sometimes to manage upkeep on the property – the hosts will give plenty of notice if that’s due to happen
*The pool isn’t heated
*Keen bird watchers might want to bring along some binoculars
