Hillside villas with pools above the city, beach houses in Malibu and canyon homes with views to the Pacific
As featured in
Los Angeles makes little sense from a hotel room. It is a sprawl of separate neighbourhoods strung between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific, and the way to understand it is the way Angelenos live: a house in the hills or by the sea, a pool in the garden, and a car to take you to dinner.
Our Los Angeles collection runs to 400+ properties, from modern glass houses on the ridges of Laurel Canyon and Beverly Crest to ocean-view villas in Malibu, family homes with pools in Encino and Sherman Oaks, and large estates in Bel Air with tennis courts and room for a crowd.
Here is how the city divides up, where to base yourself and when the light is at its best.

Laurel Canyon is still known for the songwriters who lived up its winding lanes in the late 1960s, Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills and Nash among them. These days it is a leafy, slightly bohemian place of hillside houses, a few minutes' drive above the Sunset Strip.
West of here, Beverly Crest and Bel Air climb into the Santa Monica Mountains, and Mulholland Drive runs along the ridge with views over the basin on one side and the San Fernando Valley on the other. Houses up here tend to be private and quiet, often with infinity pools facing the city lights. After dark, the Griffith Observatory is the place to see the whole grid glittering below.

Malibu is a long, thin ribbon of coast along the Pacific Coast Highway, where the mountains drop almost straight into the sea. Zuma is the big, open family beach, Point Dume has headland walks and seasonal whale watching, and El Matador is all sea stacks and coves, best caught at sunset.
Inland, Topanga Canyon keeps its hippie roots, with oak-shaded trails and an easy-going village. Further down the coast, the Santa Monica Pier and the Venice canals, laid out by Abbot Kinney in the early twentieth century, make a good afternoon on foot or by bicycle along the beach path.

West Hollywood is the most walkable corner of a city that rarely walks, with the Sunset Strip's music venues and rooftop bars, the boutiques of Melrose Avenue and some of the best restaurants in town. Close by, the Original Farmers Market on Fairfax has been feeding Angelenos since the 1930s.
Beverly Hills is quieter and greener, with palm-lined streets and the shops of Rodeo Drive. For culture, the Getty sits on its hilltop in Brentwood with gardens and a fine collection, and LACMA's lamp-post installation, Urban Light, is a favourite on an evening stroll down Wilshire Boulevard.

Los Angeles eats extremely well and not always expensively. Expect taco trucks, Korean barbecue in Koreatown, the stalls of Grand Central Market downtown and the Wednesday farmers' market in Santa Monica, where the city's chefs do their shopping.
The weather is mild all year, but the coast often wakes to cloud in May and June, a spell locals call June Gloom. September and October are usually the warmest and clearest months, and summer brings concerts under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. Our concierge can arrange car hire or a driver, restaurant tables, studio tours and Hollywood Bowl tickets.

With 400+ properties in Los Angeles, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Car hire and private drivers, LAX transfers, restaurant reservations, private chefs, studio tours, Hollywood Bowl tickets and day trips along the Pacific Coast Highway. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
It depends on the holiday you want. Laurel Canyon, the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Crest have views and privacy close to West Hollywood. Bel Air and Beverly Hills have the grandest houses, Malibu is best for the beach, and Encino and Sherman Oaks in the Valley give families more space for their money.
Los Angeles is mild all year. September and October are often the warmest and clearest months, spring turns the hills green, and summer is the season for the beach and the Hollywood Bowl. May and June can be cloudy near the coast in the mornings.
