Mid-century houses and desert villas with pools, beneath the San Jacinto mountains
As featured in
Palm Springs became Hollywood's weekend retreat in the 1930s. Stars came out from Los Angeles for the dry heat, the privacy and a contract clause that kept them within two hours of the studios. They left behind a town full of low, glass-walled houses with butterfly roofs, designed by architects such as Richard Neutra, Albert Frey and William Krisel. Many of those houses are still lived in, swum beside and sometimes rented.
Our collection runs to 330+ villas across the Coachella Valley. There are modernist houses in Palm Springs itself, family homes in Cathedral City and large golf villas in La Quinta, Indio and Coachella, and nearly all of them have a private pool, many with a hot tub as well.
Here is a guide to the towns of the valley, the seasons and how to make the most of a desert holiday.

The town is at its best on foot or by bicycle. You can wander the Movie Colony and Old Las Palmas to see the houses, browse the vintage furniture shops on North Palm Canyon Drive, or look in on the Palm Springs Art Museum. On Thursday evenings VillageFest closes the main street for a market. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, downtown, tells the story of the Cahuilla people, whose land much of the town stands on.
For a change of air, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway climbs Chino Canyon in rotating cars to a mountain station at around 2,600 metres. Up there it is cool and wooded, and in winter there is often snow. Closer to the ground, the Indian Canyons have walking trails among groves of native fan palms.

Cathedral City begins where Palm Springs ends. It is where most of our villas are, and it suits families and groups who want a generous house and garden within a short drive of downtown restaurants. Several homes sit on quiet residential streets with views to the mountains.
Rancho Mirage, next along, is greener and more private. Its great sight is Sunnylands, the Annenberg estate where American presidents have entertained world leaders. The gardens and visitor centre are open to the public, and house tours are worth booking ahead.

Further east the valley turns to golf. La Quinta is home to PGA West and a small, pleasant old town, and its villas are often large houses on or beside a course. Indian Wells hosts the BNP Paribas Open each March, one of the biggest tournaments in tennis outside the four Grand Slams. Palm Desert has El Paseo, the valley's smartest shopping street.
Indio and Coachella, at the far end, are farming country, with date palms in neat rows and some of our biggest villas, which tend to fill up quickly in festival season.

The season runs from October to May, with warm, dry days and cool evenings. January brings the Palm Springs International Film Festival. In February, Modernism Week opens the doors of private houses for tours and talks. April belongs to the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals in Indio. Summer is fiercely hot, so the pool becomes your whole day.
Do try a date shake, a valley speciality, at Shields Date Garden in Indio. Our concierge can book tee times, Modernism Week tours, festival transfers, restaurant tables and a day trip to Joshua Tree.
