Most people come to Kissimmee for the theme parks, and there is no shame in that. Walt Disney World is just to the west, with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld a little further north. Stay a few days, though, and you find an older Florida underneath: a former cow town with a rodeo that has run for decades, and a downtown on the shore of Lake Tohopekaliga, where the Everglades begin.

Gated communities on the Disney side of town
Kissimmee's holiday homes are mostly in gated resort communities south and west of the town, along the US 192 corridor and out towards ChampionsGate and Davenport. They were built with visiting families in mind, so the houses tend to be generous, many with private pools, and the largest sleep up to 32 guests.
ChampionsGate is the polished choice, built around its golf club and the Omni resort. Davenport, just over the Polk County line, is quieter and gives you more room. The communities closer to 192 put the Disney gates a very short drive away.

Short drives, long afternoons by the pool
Walt Disney World is just west of Kissimmee, and Universal Orlando and SeaWorld are not much further, so even a busy park itinerary means short drives rather than long ones. A villa suits this rhythm well: a morning on the rides, a swim and a sleep through the worst of the afternoon heat, then back out for the evening shows.
Golfers are well looked after. ChampionsGate Golf Club has 36 holes designed by Greg Norman. The International is a links-style course with pot bunkers and grassy dunes, and the National is a parkland course laid out over former orange groves and wetlands.

Rodeo, airboats and Lake Toho
Before Disney arrived, this was Kow Town, a cattle town of working ranches, and the heritage has survived. The Silver Spurs Rodeo, Florida's official state rodeo since 1994, fills the Silver Spurs Arena each February, with a second rodeo in June.
Downtown Kissimmee sits on the northern shore of Lake Tohopekaliga, known locally as Lake Toho. It covers around 22,700 acres and is part of the chain of lakes that feeds the Everglades. Lakefront Park has a walking path where alligators, turtles and wading birds are a common sight. Out on the lake you can take an airboat ride, or spend a morning with a guide after largemouth bass, which Lake Toho is famous for.

Osceola County has a large Puerto Rican community, and some of Kissimmee's best cooking reflects it: mofongo, roast pork and strong coffee in modest family restaurants. Barbecue joints keep the cattle-country side of things going.
