As well as offering breathtaking, gorgeous, sandy beaches, the island boasts a wealth of cultural gems. The golden Big Budda is the most famous landmark on Koh Samui. It is 12 metres tall and can’t be missed! Inside the grounds of the Wat Phra Yai Temple, the golden Budda is a favourite attraction with hundreds of visitor’s cameras at the ready! There are many colourful stands surrounding the Big Budda selling souvenirs and street food. The Wat Khunaran Temple has mummified monks displayed in caskets surrounded by flowers, candles, incense sticks and fruit offerings. Wat Plai Laem is another very colourful, busy and active Buddhist temple.
The jungle interior can be explored by jeep, motorbike or by hiking. It is stunning and fascinating with incredible views from the mountain tops. Laem Sor Temple has a golden pagoda and a boat-shaped Buddist temple, Chedi offers stunning views of the surrounding jungle countryside and islands and the mountain-top Wat Teepankorn Temple is Instagram worthy at Lamai. The Namuang Waterfalls are amazing. The Secret Budda Garden, otherwise known as the Magic Garden, is hidden away high in the hills, atop the Tar Nim Waterfall peak. It boasts majestic views and an impressive collection of statues. The gardens are the creation of Nim Thongsuk, an old Samui fruit farmer who started erecting statues and temples around his family’s lush land and continued until his death at 91. Each statue has a story to tell and most Thais will know the meaning and mythology behind the thought-provoking works of art.
The famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks are intriguing rock formations at the southern end of Lamai Beach which are a source of giggles as they look like genitalia. They are called the Grandpa and Grandma Rocks.
The colourful Fisherman’s Village is situated in the centre of Bophut Beach. The atmospheric warren of narrow roads is brimming with old wooden Chinese shop-houses. The fabulous Friday Bophut Walking Street night market is perfect for buying clothes and trinkets to take home. There is also plenty of street food available.
