Old shophouses, a calm bay and Koh Phangan across the water

Bo Put, often spelt Bophut, is the part of Koh Samui that people tend to come back to. Its heart is Fisherman's Village, a street of old Chinese and Thai wooden shophouses facing a sheltered bay, now full of restaurants, wine bars and small galleries. It looks out to Koh Phangan, and the water is calm and shallow. There are no tower blocks and no relentless beach strip, and nobody seems to miss them.

Our Bo Put collection runs to 80+ villas, from hillside houses with long views over the Gulf of Thailand to large family villas with private pools and room for a gathering of several generations. Several have spas, and the largest has 10 bedrooms.

This is a guide to the area: where to base yourself, what to do and when to come.

Where to stay in Bo Put

Fisherman's Village for restaurants and the Friday market, the hills behind the bay for views and privacy, Big Buddha and Choeng Mon to the east, and quieter Mae Nam just to the west.

Fisherman's Village

A street of wooden shophouses by the sea

The old village is a single long street of about half a kilometre, its timber shophouses restored rather than knocked down. By day it is quiet. People swim, read under the casuarinas and wander between cafés. In the evening the terraces fill and you can eat grilled fish with your feet more or less in the sand.

On Friday nights the street closes to traffic for the Walking Street market, which runs from around five until ten. There are stalls of grilled prawns, papaya salad, roti and mango sticky rice, along with silver, silk and linen, and acoustic music on the corners. It is busy, so arrive early or come back later once the first rush has gone.

Views from above, and a golden Buddha

Many of the larger villas sit on the slopes behind the bay. From there you look out over the water to Koh Phangan, and you are still only a few minutes from dinner. East along the coast, the twelve-metre golden Buddha of Wat Phra Yai sits on the islet of Koh Fan, reached by a causeway. Nearby is Wat Plai Laem, with its many-armed statue of Guanyin standing in a lake.

Beyond the headland, Choeng Mon has a string of small, sheltered coves, and is a good choice for families with young swimmers.

Islands & Day Trips

Boats from the doorstep

Being on the north coast puts the neighbouring islands within easy reach. Bangrak, next door to Bo Put, has piers for boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and speedboat and longtail trips run to Ang Thong National Marine Park. That is a scatter of more than forty limestone islands with lagoons, kayaking and a famous viewpoint climb.

Mae Nam, just to the west, is quieter still, with a long beach and an unhurried village feel. It is a good alternative for those who want Bo Put's restaurants within reach without living on top of them.

Food & the Seasons

Grilled prawns, coconuts and the monsoon calendar

Samui was a coconut island long before it was a holiday island, and coconut runs through the cooking here, from curries to ice cream served in the shell. Bo Put has some of the island's best dining, from beach grills to serious Thai kitchens.

Samui keeps its own weather calendar. The driest, sunniest months run from late December to around August, and April is the hottest. The heaviest rain falls in October and November, when much of mainland Thailand is drying out. Our concierge can arrange restaurant tables, boat days to Ang Thong, in-villa massage, Thai cookery classes and airport transfers.

Why book your Bo Put villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Bo Put's villas range from houses a stroll from Fisherman's Village to hillside homes up steep tracks, and we know which suit young children, which have the best views and which let you walk to dinner. With 80+ properties in Bo Put, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Restaurant reservations, boat trips to Ang Thong and Koh Phangan, in-villa massage and spa treatments, Thai cookery classes, nannies, car hire and transfers from Samui airport. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
