Hillside pool villas above the Gulf of Thailand, from Bo Phut and Mae Nam to the quiet sunset coast
As featured in
Koh Samui is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand, and it has kept more of its coconut-farming character than its size and popularity might suggest. Inland it is jungle and steep green hills. Around the edge are long, gently shelving beaches, fishing villages with old wooden shophouses, and gilded temples on rocky points. Even the airport has thatched open-air pavilions in place of a terminal, which sets the tone rather well.
Our Koh Samui collection runs to 190+ villas, most of them on the hillsides of the north and west coasts. They range from four and five bedroom pool villas with views across to Koh Phangan to large estates with several infinity pools, the largest with 15 bedrooms.
Here is a guide to the coasts, the islands offshore and the best time of year to come.

Luxury Beachfront Villa Rental in Thailand – Odyssey Retreat8 bedroomsBo Phut for the Fisherman's Village and easy access to Chaweng, Mae Nam for a long, quiet beach on the north coast, and Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam in the west for calm water and sunsets.

Bo Phut is where most of our villas are, and with good reason. Its Fisherman's Village is a strip of old Chinese wooden shophouses that now hold boutique hotels, beach bars and some of the island's better restaurants. On Friday evenings the main street closes to traffic for the walking street market, with grilled seafood, mango sticky rice and a great deal of people-watching.
The Big Buddha sits on a small island joined to the shore by a causeway, and Wat Plai Laem, with its many-armed Guanyin rising from a lake, is close by. Chaweng, busier and livelier, is a short drive east. Mae Nam, further west, has a long, quiet beach and a slower pace that suits families.

The west coast is Samui at its most unhurried. Lipa Noi has shallow, sheltered water that small children love, and Taling Ngam, in the south west, has a handful of villas looking out to the islands of Ang Thong as the sun goes down. Nathon, the island's main town and ferry port, is the place to see everyday Samui life at its morning market.
Inland from the south coast, the Na Muang waterfalls drop through the jungle in two tiers, and the second makes a good morning walk. On the way round, Lamai has a fine beach and the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks, whose shapes have amused visitors for generations.

The Ang Thong National Marine Park is the great day out from Samui: an archipelago of 42 limestone islands with sea caves, white beaches and an emerald saltwater lake hidden inside one of them. Sea kayaking and snorkelling fill the day, and the climb to the viewpoint on Koh Wua Talab is steep but well worth the effort.
Koh Phangan is a short ferry ride north, with far more to it than its monthly beach parties, and Koh Tao, further out, is one of the best places in Thailand to learn to dive. A private boat makes all of this a good deal more comfortable.

Samui eats in the southern Thai style, hotter and sourer than in Bangkok: gaeng som, a tart turmeric fish curry, crab cooked in coconut, and seafood grilled on the beach at dusk. The coconut, once the island's whole economy, still turns up in almost everything.
The Gulf has its own weather, and it is not the same as Phuket's. Samui is usually at its best from January to August, when Phuket can be wet, while the heaviest rain here tends to fall from October to December. Our concierge can arrange a private boat to Ang Thong, a Thai cookery class, spa treatments and restaurant tables in Bo Phut.

With 190+ properties in Koh Samui, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Private boat charters to Ang Thong and Koh Phangan, airport and pier transfers, in-villa massage and spa treatments, Thai cookery classes, diving trips to Koh Tao and restaurant reservations in Bo Phut. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Bo Phut is the most popular choice, close to the Fisherman's Village, the Big Buddha and Chaweng. Mae Nam suits families who want a quieter beach, and Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam on the west coast are best for calm water, privacy and sunsets.
January to August is usually the driest and sunniest period. The heaviest rain tends to fall from October to December, with November often the wettest month. Samui's season differs from Phuket's, so it is often at its best when the Andaman coast is wet.
Yes. Day trips by speedboat or larger boat leave from Samui and include kayaking, snorkelling and the viewpoint climb. A private charter lets you set your own pace, and trips can be cancelled in rough weather, mostly late in the year.
