A short drive from Villa Helaku, you have the island’s main town, Chaweng, which is a centre for the entertainment of all kinds every night of the week, and the island’s no.1 icon, the towering Big Buddha.The Thai island of Koh Samui is naturally beautiful and welcoming to visitors. Most of the sights around the island are accessible within an hour, so you can experience everything it has to offer wherever you stay.
A short hop from the airport, the island’s largest town, Chaweng, is also home to its liveliest nightlife. From clubbing to cabaret, and bars to boxing (Thai style), it’s the place to go for a night you won’t forget. Much of the action is centred on Soi Green Mango, but you could also hit the beach bars. It’s not all full-on hedonism – the town has some pretty upscale restaurants where you can enjoy a sophisticated dinner. It’s also the place to find the best shopping on the island – nowhere else on Samui can boast malls like Central Festival or an outlet village full of well-known fashion brands. There’s Walking Street Market too, for something more traditionally Thai.
Many people visit Koh Samui for the beautiful beaches, and you will find plenty dotted around the island, some with extra amenities, and some that are just quiet, undiscovered coves. On the north coast, Bophut beach is known for its Fisherman’s Village, which is what it once was, sitting in the centre. Old wooden shopfronts and a now semi-collapsed pier are an indication of its past; it now has plenty of modern restaurants and shops to explore.
Among the island’s best-known attractions, the 12-metre high, golden Big Buddha, is also up north. Further south, you have the Namuang Waterfall and a zoo and aquarium, known for its tiger shows, sharks and exotic birds, among other species.
All sorts of adventures can be enjoyed around Koh Samui, with the Sky Fox ride, which sends you hurtling through the trees, a particularly exhilarating one.
