Villas in Almería

Desert light, volcanic coves and the quietest coast in Andalusia

Almería is the Spain that the Costa del Sol forgot to build over. It is the easternmost province of Andalusia and the most arid in Europe, and the landscape looks more North African than Spanish: bare sierras, dry riverbeds, cactus and a coastline of volcanic cliffs and empty coves. Film directors noticed long before the villa crowd did, and more than three hundred films have been shot here.

Our Almería collection runs to 35 villas, most of them in and around Cuevas del Almanzora in the north east of the province, close to the beaches of the Levante and a desert golf course, with a smaller group near Níjar on the edge of the Cabo de Gata natural park.

Here is how the province divides up, and when it is best to come.

Where to stay in Almería

Cuevas del Almanzora for golf, cave houses and the long beaches of the Levante, and Níjar for pottery, white villages and the wild volcanic coast of Cabo de Gata.

Cuevas del Almanzora

A castle, cave houses and a cactus fairway

Cuevas del Almanzora takes its name from the caves cut into the hills around it. Some, at Calguerín, are still lived in, and one is now a small museum of cave life. In the middle of town stands the sixteenth-century castle of the Marqués de los Vélez, which now holds a museum of contemporary art and an archaeological collection.

The municipality has around 17 kilometres of coast, with open beaches at Villaricos, Palomares and Calón and smaller coves under the cliffs, such as Cala Panizo. Golfers come for Desert Springs, a desert course designed by Peter McEvoy and planted with cacti, which looks more like Arizona than Andalusia. Mojácar, Vera and Garrucha are all a short drive away.

Níjar & Cabo de Gata

Volcanic cliffs and beaches without a single hotel

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park is the largest protected stretch of coast in Andalusia. It became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997 and is also a UNESCO Global Geopark, for its volcanic domes, lava flows and calderas. The beaches of Los Genoveses and Mónsul are as close to untouched as the Spanish Mediterranean gets.

The villages are small and white: San José with its fishing harbour, Las Negras, Agua Amarga and Rodalquilar, an old gold-mining village in a volcanic crater. Inland, the hill town of Níjar is known for its glazed pottery and jarapas, the colourful woven rugs sold in its workshops.

Almería City & the Desert

A Moorish fortress and the Wild West

Above Almería city rises the Alcazaba, the largest Islamic fortress in Spain after the Alhambra. Abd al-Rahman III began it in 955, and its walls stood in for Dorne in Game of Thrones.

Thirty kilometres north lies the Tabernas Desert, a landscape of badlands and ravines where Sergio Leone filmed A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. A few of the old western towns are still standing, including Fort Bravo, and Tabernas holds a western film festival every October. Children love it, and quite a few fathers do too.

Food & the Seasons

Red prawns, gurullos and a long, dry year

Almería was named Spain's Capital of Gastronomy in 2019, and you eat well here without much ceremony. The bars of the city still bring a free tapa with every drink. Order the red prawns landed at Garrucha, and look out for gurullos, a hearty local stew made with small hand-rolled pasta.

Summer is long, hot and very dry, and July and August are the months for the sea. Spring and autumn are better for walking the Cabo de Gata coast and for golf. The winters are mild, and between December and March a little rain can turn the desert hills briefly green. Our concierge can arrange tee times, boat trips along the cliffs, restaurant tables and transfers.

Why book your Almería villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Almería is a large province with long, empty roads between its golf, its beaches and its natural park, and we know which villas put you within an easy drive of the things you came for. With 35 properties in Almería, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Tee times at Desert Springs, boat trips along the Cabo de Gata cliffs, a day at the Tabernas film sets, restaurant reservations, car hire and transfers from Almería or Murcia. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
