Villas with pools above white beaches and granite coves, from Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio to Saint-Florent and the Balagne
As featured in
Corsica looks less like an island than a mountain range that has waded out into the Mediterranean. Monte Cinto rises to 2,706 metres, the maquis smells of myrtle and wild herbs, and old Genoese watchtowers still stand guard over coves of startlingly clear water. The island has been French since 1768, but it has its own language, its own cooking and a quiet pride the visitor soon learns to respect.
Our Corsica collection runs to 70+ villas, from contemporary houses with infinity pools above Palombaggia and the Gulf of Bonifacio to stone villas in the hill villages of the Balagne and seaside houses near Saint-Florent and Porticcio.
What follows is a short guide to the south, the north and the west, with a word on the table and the seasons.

The far south has the beaches people fly here for. Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, just outside Porto-Vecchio, are long curves of pale sand fringed with umbrella pines, and the water is the colour of a swimming pool.
Bonifacio is something else entirely: an old citadel balanced on white limestone cliffs, with a staircase cut into the rock face known as the King of Aragon's Steps. Boats leave the harbour for the Lavezzi islands, and on a clear day Sardinia sits plainly across the strait. Inland, the granite needles of Bavella make a fine morning's walk, followed by a long lunch in the shade.

In the north, Saint-Florent is a small, easy-going port with a marina and good fish restaurants, and the vineyards of Patrimonio begin just behind it. In summer, boats run along the empty coast of the Agriates to the beaches of Saleccia and Lotu, which you can otherwise only reach by a long track or on foot.
Further west, the Balagne is the island's old garden: olive groves and hill villages such as Pigna and Sant'Antonino, where craftsmen still work, above the citadel town of Calvi and the beaches of L'Île-Rousse. Villas here tend to come with long views and cooler evenings.

Ajaccio, the island's capital, is where Napoleon was born in 1769, and the family house is now a museum. Across the bay, Porticcio has sandy beaches and a gentler pace, with the airport close at hand.
North of Ajaccio, the coast turns dramatic. The red granite Calanques de Piana, the Gulf of Porto and the Scandola nature reserve together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best seen by boat. To the south, Sartène is a stern granite town famous for its Good Friday procession, and the prehistoric statue-menhirs of Filitosa are an easy excursion.

Corsican cooking comes from the mountains as much as the sea. Look for brocciu, the fresh ewe's or goat's cheese that turns up in omelettes, pastries and fiadone, a light cheesecake; for chestnut flour, charcuterie and wild boar stew; and for Patrimonio reds from the Niellucciu grape and crisp Vermentinu whites.
July and August are hot and busy, and the coast roads fill up. June and September are kinder, with the sea at its warmest in early autumn, while May brings the maquis into flower and suits walkers. Our concierge can arrange boat days, transfers, wine visits and restaurant tables.

With 70+ properties in Corsica, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Boat days to the Lavezzi islands and Scandola, transfers from Figari, Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi, guided walks in Bavella, wine visits in Patrimonio, private chefs and restaurant reservations. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio in the south have the best-known beaches and the widest choice of villas. Saint-Florent and the Balagne suit those who want vineyards, hill villages and Calvi, and the Gulf of Ajaccio is convenient for the airport and the west coast.
June and September are ideal, with warm seas and fewer visitors than July and August. May and October suit walking and touring, when the maquis is in flower or the heat has eased.
The GR20 is around 180 kilometres long and is usually walked over about two weeks, so it is one of the hardest long-distance paths in Europe. Most villa guests walk shorter sections or day routes instead, for example around the Bavella needles, and our concierge can arrange a mountain guide.

Across our 70+ villas in Corsica, weekly rates typically range from £2,000 to £6,200, with the most affordable from around £1,400 a week and the largest estates well above. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.
There are seasonal direct flights from London to Figari, Bastia, Ajaccio and Calvi, taking around two and a half hours. Figari is best for Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio, and Bastia or Calvi for the north. Ferries also sail from Marseille, Nice and Toulon, and from Italian ports such as Livorno and Genoa.
