At the eastern end of Long Island, the South Fork runs out towards the Atlantic as a string of old villages, potato fields, vineyards and pale ocean beaches backed by dunes. New Yorkers have summered here since the railway arrived in the nineteenth century, and painters followed the light, from William Merritt Chase to Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. The Friday crawl along Route 27 in July is as much a local institution as the lobster roll.

The old whaling port for a historic village on the bay, East Hampton and Amagansett for ocean beaches and polish, Montauk for surf and fishing, and Westhampton Beach for the shortest drive from the city.
A whaling port with good manners
The South Fork's old whaling port made its fortune in the early nineteenth century, and the captains' houses still line its streets. Melville mentions the town in Moby-Dick, and its whaling museum tells the story well. It is the most village-like corner of the Hamptons, with a working harbour, a long wharf, bookshops and the American Hotel on Main Street, and it faces the bay rather than the ocean.
A short ferry crosses to Shelter Island, where the Mashomack Preserve covers around a third of the island with woods, salt marsh and quiet shoreline trails. Houses around Noyac give you bay views and calm water for paddling.

Ocean beaches and painters' country
East Hampton is the polished heart of the South Fork, with a village green, old windmills, Guild Hall for theatre and exhibitions, and Main Beach, a broad stretch of ocean sand behind the dunes. In Springs, just to the north, the Pollock-Krasner House keeps the barn where Pollock made his drip paintings, its floor still spattered with colour.
Amagansett, next along, is quieter and a little more barefoot, with wide beaches and farm stands along Montauk Highway. To the west, Bridgehampton hosts the Hampton Classic horse show at the end of August, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill shows the artists who have worked out here, and golfers will know Shinnecock Hills, near Southampton, which hosted the US Open again in June 2026.

The two ends of the line
Montauk sits at the far tip of the South Fork, and it has always been the scruffier, surfier cousin. Ditch Plains draws the surfers, the fishing fleet works out of the harbour, and the Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned under George Washington and lit in 1796, is the oldest in New York State. Walks through Hither Hills and along the bluffs feel a very long way from Manhattan.
At the other end, Westhampton Beach is the first of the Hamptons you reach from the city, with a lively Main Street and ocean beaches along Dune Road. It makes for the shortest Friday drive, which by August counts for a great deal.

Lobster rolls, sweet corn and a long September
Summer here runs from Memorial Day at the end of May to Labor Day in early September, and in July and August half of Manhattan seems to arrive. September is the month locals keep for themselves: the sea is still warm, the roads are clearer and tables are easier to come by.
Eat lobster rolls on the way to Montauk, sweet corn and tomatoes from the farm stands in August, rosé from the vineyards at Sagaponack and, from November, Peconic Bay scallops. Across the water, the North Fork's wineries and Greenport's harbour make a fine day out.
