The Caribbean villa is the original escape from a northern winter, and it has never been bettered. On St Barths, a French island with better bread than most of Paris, rent a hillside villa above Gustavia harbour or a beach house on Saint-Jean, with lunch at the water's edge and a Moke to take you to Gouverneur and Colombier, the two most beautiful beaches on the island. Barbados offers the Platinum Coast of the west, from Sandy Lane to Holetown and Speightstown: coral stone villas with lawns running down to a calm, gin-clear sea, cricket in the afternoon and rum punch at sunset.
Turks & Caicos has Grace Bay, as close to a perfect beach as the Atlantic has managed. Antigua claims a beach for every day of the year and makes a persuasive case for it, particularly around English Harbour in Race Week. Jamaica brings great houses with full staff in residence, Saint Lucia has the twin Pitons rising straight from the sea, and the pink sand of Harbour Island in the Bahamas remains one of the loveliest beaches in the region. The Maldives is some 1,200 coral islands scattered across 26 atolls, and very few places on the planet feel as far removed from ordinary life. Our Maldives collection concentrates on the villas that justify the long flight: water villas on stilts above the lagoon with steps straight into the sea, beach villas with their own stretch of white sand, and multi-bedroom residences large enough for three generations to share without anyone feeling crowded. Mornings are for snorkelling the house reef with turtles and reef sharks, afternoons for doing nothing whatsoever, and evenings for dinner on a sandbank that disappears at high tide.
Further across the Indian Ocean, Mauritius combines beach villas on the north coast around Grand Baie with the dramatic Le Morne peninsula in the southwest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest kitesurfing spots in the world. Marrakech riads, Cape Town villas and private game reserves
Morocco is three and a half hours from London and feels a world away. In Marrakech, a riad behind a plain door in the Medina opens onto a tiled courtyard, a plunge pool and orange trees, with the souks a few minutes' walk away; out in the Palmeraie, walled estates with large pools and gardens offer the space the old city cannot. Essaouira on the Atlantic coast is cooler, calmer and much loved by those who find Marrakech a little too exciting in August. The Atlas Mountains are an easy day trip, and our concierge arranges the lunch in a Berber village that makes it memorable.
South Africa combines Cape Town villas above Clifton and Camps Bay, with Table Mountain behind and the Atlantic in front, with the wine estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek an hour inland. Beyond the Cape lie the private game reserves bordering Kruger National Park, the dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia and, from July to October, the great migration across Kenya's Masai Mara. We arrange the full itinerary: villa, lodges, bush flights and guides who know exactly where the leopard was yesterday.
