Where the winter holiday began

St Moritz claims to be the birthplace of winter tourism, and it has the story to prove it: in 1864 a local hotelier, Johannes Badrutt, bet a group of English summer guests that they would enjoy the Engadin just as much in winter, and offered to pay their costs if they did not. They stayed until Easter, and the rest is history. The resort has since hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948.

Our St Moritz collection runs to 25 chalets, villas and apartments in St Moritz and the surrounding Engadin villages, from traditional Engadin houses with thick walls and painted facades to contemporary chalets with spas and staff.

Here is a guide to St Moritz, its skiing and its famously sociable winter season.

The Resort & the Engadin

Sunshine, lakes and a little glamour

St Moritz sits at around 1,800 metres above a lake in the Upper Engadin, a high, wide valley known for its dry air and remarkable sunshine. The town has the grand hotels and designer boutiques for which it is famous, while the surrounding villages of Celerina, Pontresina, Silvaplana and Sils offer a quieter Engadin of old stone houses with sgraffito facades.

Many visitors stay in one of these villages and come into St Moritz for dinner, shopping and the events on the lake.

The Skiing

Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza

Corviglia, above the town, is the main ski area, with broad, sunny pistes and a celebrated collection of mountain restaurants. Corvatsch, across the valley above Silvaplana, is higher and offers long runs and floodlit night skiing, while Diavolezza, near Pontresina, faces glaciers and includes a famous descent across the Morteratsch glacier.

The Engadin is also one of the great cross-country skiing regions of the Alps, with trails across the frozen lakes.

Cresta, White Turf and snow polo

St Moritz's winter is built around its events. The Cresta Run, a natural ice toboggan track first built in the nineteenth century, is still ridden head first by members of its club. In February, the frozen lake hosts White Turf horse racing, and snow polo is played on the ice. The Olympic bobsleigh run is the world's oldest natural ice track.

Our concierge can arrange transfers, ski instructors, restaurant reservations, event tickets where available, and private aircraft arrangements via Engadin airport.
