Pool villas above the Andaman Sea, from the beaches of the west coast to the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay

Phuket gets judged by Patong, which is a bit like judging Cornwall by Newquay on a bank holiday. Away from Bangla Road the island has quiet bays on the west coast, jungle-covered hills in the north, and an old town of Sino-Portuguese shophouses where the cooking is good enough to have earned Phuket a place in UNESCO's network of Creative Cities of Gastronomy.
Our Phuket collection runs to 290+ properties, from hillside pool villas above Kamala and Bang Tao to large family houses near the southern beaches. It also goes beyond the island, to beach villas in Khao Lak, island hideaways on Ko Yao Noi and a few further afield in Thailand.
What follows covers where to stay, when to come and what to do once the pool loses its appeal.

Most of Phuket's best villas line the west coast between the airport and Patong. Bang Tao, in Choeng Thale, is a long curve of sand backed by the Laguna resorts, with good restaurants and beach clubs and an easy run from the airport.
Just south, Surin and Kamala are smaller and greener. Villas climb the headlands here, so many look straight out over the Andaman Sea at sunset. Patong is close enough for an evening out and, for most people, far enough away to sleep.

Karon and Kata are the family beaches: wide, sandy and lined with cafés. Kata Noi, over the next headland, is quieter still. Further south, Nai Harn is a favourite with residents, with a lake to walk around and a beach that stays calm in the dry season.
Rawai, at the southern tip, is less about the beach and more about seafood. Its fishing village sells the morning's catch, and the restaurants nearby will cook it for you. Promthep Cape is the island's sunset spot, and the Big Buddha watches over everything from the hill above Chalong.

East of Phuket, Phang Nga Bay is scattered with limestone towers rising out of green water. A day by longtail or private boat takes in sea caves, the stilt village of Ko Panyi and Khao Phing Kan, the rock made famous by The Man with the Golden Gun.
Ko Yao Noi, a short boat ride across the bay, is rubber plantations, quiet roads and fishing villages, and our villas there suit anyone who wants to switch off properly. On the mainland to the north, Khao Lak has long, empty beaches and is the gateway to the Similan Islands, which usually open to visitors from mid-October to mid-May.

Phuket's cooking owes a lot to the Hokkien Chinese who came for the tin mines. Try mee hokkien noodles, moo hong (pork belly slow-braised with black pepper), and a dim sum breakfast in Phuket Town. On Sunday evenings Thalang Road becomes a walking street market. The Vegetarian Festival, held in the ninth lunar month and usually falling in late September or October, brings processions and firecrackers to the old town.
November to April is dry and the sea is calm. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings showers and rougher water on the west coast, but villas are quieter then. Our concierge can arrange boat charters, a private chef, Thai cooking lessons, spa treatments and airport transfers.

Bang Tao and Kamala on the west coast have many of the finest villas, with good beaches and an easy run from the airport. Kata and Karon suit families who want to walk to the sand. Rawai and Nai Harn in the south feel quieter and more lived-in.
November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and plenty of sunshine, and it is the busiest time. May to October brings the southwest monsoon, with showers and rougher water on the west coast, but villas are quieter then and the island is very green.
