Villas on the Costa del Sol

Mountains at your back, Africa on a clear day

The Costa del Sol follows the coast of Málaga province, with the sierras rising steeply behind it. That is what sets it apart. A villa here can be twenty minutes from a beach club and still look out over cork oaks and terraced hillsides, with the Rif mountains of Morocco showing faintly across the strait on a clear morning. Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club in the 1950s, and the coast has kept its glamour ever since, though the quieter pleasures are just inland.

Our Costa del Sol collection runs to 210+ villas and apartments. They range from large modern villas in Benahavís and the gated estate of La Zagaleta to family houses in Nueva Andalucía, and from sea-view apartments in Elviria to hillside homes around Mijas and Casares. The largest have 14 bedrooms.

Here is how the coast divides up, and when it is at its best.

Where to stay on the Costa del Sol

Marbella, Nueva Andalucía and Benahavís for the smartest villas, golf and restaurants, Mijas and Casares for white villages with sea views, Istán for the mountains, and Torrox for the quieter eastern coast.

Marbella & Benahavís

The Golden Mile and the hills behind it

Marbella is where most people start. The old town is a maze of whitewashed lanes around the Plaza de los Naranjos, the Golden Mile runs west towards the yachts and late nights of Puerto Banús, and Nueva Andalucía climbs the hill behind into the so-called Golf Valley, with several courses within a few minutes of each other.

Inland, Benahavís is a small white village with a large reputation for restaurants, and the surrounding hills hold some of the coast's grandest houses, including those in the gated La Zagaleta estate. It is the choice for space, privacy and long views down to the sea.

Mijas & Casares

Two white villages, two characters

Mijas Pueblo sits high above Fuengirola, close enough to Málaga airport for a short first-day drive, with geranium-hung streets, a small bullring and terraces looking straight out to sea. The villas in the hills around it tend to be roomier than those on the coast, and many come with gardens and tennis courts.

Casares, at the western end of the coast, is the more dramatic of the two: a cascade of white houses spilling down a ridge beneath the ruins of a Moorish castle. It was the birthplace of Blas Infante, the father of Andalusian nationalism. Below it, golf courses and quiet beaches run down to the sea.

Istán & the East

Fir forests above Marbella, and a gentler eastern shore

Istán is a village of Moorish origin only around fifteen kilometres from Marbella's beaches, yet it feels much further. It looks over the Concepción reservoir and serves as one of the gateways to the Sierra de las Nieves, made Spain's newest national park in 2021 and home to rare Spanish fir forests.

East of Málaga, Torrox lies in the Axarquía, with its old village a few kilometres inland and a long beach on the coast. The town claims the best climate in Europe, and the winters are certainly mild. The Nerja caves and the hill village of Frigiliana are both close by.

Food & the Seasons

Espetos, ajoblanco and a long summer

The great beach ritual is the espeto: sardines threaded on a cane and grilled over driftwood in an old boat filled with sand. Málaga adds ajoblanco, a cold soup of almonds and garlic, fried fish by the platter and its own sweet wine. The city's feria fills the streets every August, and Holy Week processions draw crowds each spring.

The sea is warm enough for most from June to October. Spring and autumn are the best times for golf and walking in the sierras, and winter is mild enough for lunch outdoors. Our concierge can book tee times, restaurant tables and Alhambra tickets.

Why book your Costa del Sol villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

On the Costa del Sol a few kilometres can mean a very different holiday, and we know which villas are a short walk from a beach and which are a winding drive up a mountain road. With 210+ properties on the Costa del Sol, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Tee times in the Golf Valley, restaurant tables in Marbella and Benahavís, boat trips from Puerto Banús, Alhambra tickets, a private chef and transfers from Málaga. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
