Beachfront villas, Sandy Lane estates and plantation houses on the calm, white-sand west coast
As featured in
Barbados has been the British winter escape of choice for generations, and it wears the role with an easy, sunlit confidence. It drives on the left, plays cricket with religious devotion and serves afternoon tea, but it does all of this in thirty degrees with a rum punch close at hand. The west coast, with its calm turquoise sea and powder-white beaches, is one of the finest stretches of shoreline in the Caribbean.
Our Barbados collection runs to 270+ properties: beachfront villas on the Platinum Coast, grand estates around Sandy Lane, coral-stone plantation houses in tropical gardens and contemporary villas on the hills above Holetown and Mullins. Many come fully staffed, with a cook, housekeeper and butler, which is very much the Barbadian way of doing things.
Below is a guide to the island's coasts, the best time to visit and how to make the most of a villa holiday here.

Laughing Waters at Sandy Lane Barbados | 12-Bedroom Villa in Holetown12 bedroomsSt James for the Platinum Coast, Sandy Lane and Holetown, St Peter for Mullins and the old town of Speightstown, the south coast for a livelier scene, and the wild Atlantic east for surf and solitude.

The west coast, in the parishes of St James and St Peter, is known as the Platinum Coast, and the name was not coined by modest people. Sheltered from the Atlantic, the sea here is calm, clear and warm, the beaches are white coral sand and the sunsets are a nightly event that nobody quite gets used to. Sandy Lane, with its golf courses and celebrated hotel, sits at the heart of it.
This is where the island's grandest villas are found, many right on the sand, with private beach access, terraces for dinner under the stars and staff who seem to know you want another drink before you do. Turtles are frequent visitors close to shore, and snorkelling straight from the beach is part of the daily routine.

Holetown was the site of the first English settlement on the island, in 1627, and today it is the social centre of the west coast, with Limegrove for shopping, a row of excellent restaurants along the beach and the Holetown Festival each February. A little further north, Mullins has one of the coast's liveliest beaches, all paddleboards, sunloungers and a beach bar that never seems to close.
Speightstown, in St Peter, is the island's second town, with old wooden balconied buildings, fishing boats and a slower rhythm. Villas around here tend to offer more space and privacy, often set in tropical gardens on the hills with views straight out to sea.

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the capital repays a morning of exploring, from the parliament buildings to the cricket at Kensington Oval. The south coast is livelier, with the Friday night fish fry at Oistins, where half the island turns up for grilled mahi-mahi, music and a good deal of rum.
The east coast is another island altogether: wild Atlantic beaches, dramatic rocks at Bathsheba and the famous surf break known as the Soup Bowl. It makes a spectacular day out, with a lunch stop on the way back through the green interior and its old plantation houses and gardens.

Barbados claims to be the birthplace of rum, and Mount Gay, founded in 1703, is often described as the oldest rum brand in the world; a distillery tour is practically a civic duty. Golfers have championship courses at Sandy Lane, Royal Westmoreland and Apes Hill, polo is played through the winter, and the island's restaurants are among the best in the Caribbean.
The dry season, from December to April, brings sunshine, low humidity and the busiest weeks, with Christmas and Easter the peak. May and June offer excellent value. The rainy season runs from June to November, typically with short tropical showers rather than days of rain. Our concierge can arrange private chefs, catamaran cruises, golf tee times, island tours and restaurant reservations.
