A quiet cove beneath the Twelve Apostles
Just past the end of the Camps Bay strip, Victoria Road bends towards Llandudno and the houses thin out. That is Bakoven: a small strip of shore with granite boulders, white shell sand and the Twelve Apostles rising behind it. The name is Dutch for baking oven. It comes from a rock offshore, and at low tide you can see an opening in it that looks like the mouth of an oven.

Bakoven itself for peace and the sea at your door, Camps Bay next door for restaurants and the long beach, Clifton for its sheltered coves, and the rest of Cape Town within a short drive.
Boulders, bungalows and a lifeboat station
Bakoven's shore breaks into a few small beaches. The main one is Beta Beach, a sheltered inlet that fishermen once used as a harbour. The big granite boulders break the wind that can sweep across Camps Bay, and on a breezy afternoon that makes a real difference.
Along the water you will find the beach bungalows. They began as prefabricated wooden huts for soldiers after the Second World War, and the area is now protected for its heritage, like the bungalows at Clifton. The National Sea Rescue Institute has had a station on Beta Beach since 1967.
Strictly speaking, only the seaward side of Victoria Road counts as Bakoven. The houses on the slope above are officially part of Camps Bay, although nobody who lives there seems to mind.

Restaurants next door, crowds kept at a distance
The great advantage of Bakoven is that Camps Bay is close by but not on top of you. The strip of restaurants and bars along Victoria Road is an easy walk away, and so is the long palm-lined beach. You can have lunch in the busiest part of the Atlantic Seaboard and be back on your own terrace for sundowners.
Further north, the four Clifton beaches sit below steep steps. They are among the most sheltered spots on this coast, and in summer they are popular with Capetonians.
The Apostles above, the coast road below
The Twelve Apostles are part of Table Mountain National Park. Hiking routes lead up from the Camps Bay side, and Kasteelspoort is the best known. It is a steep climb that rewards you with sweeping views over the Atlantic. Lion's Head and the Table Mountain cableway are both a short drive away.
South of Bakoven, the coast road runs past the boulder beaches and picnic lawns of Oudekraal to Llandudno and Hout Bay. It is one of the most popular drives in the Cape, and from Hout Bay you can continue along Chapman's Peak Drive or take a boat out to the seals.
Sundowners, snoek and a long summer
Sunset is the main event in Bakoven. People carry a bottle down to the rocks and watch the sun drop into the Atlantic, with Lion's Head on one side. For dinner, try fish at Hout Bay harbour, a braai on your own terrace, or the Constantia wine farms, around half an hour's drive away.
Summer runs from November to April and brings long dry days, although the south-easter can blow hard. Winter is cooler and wetter, and it is also when whales are often seen in the bay. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, guided hikes, winelands days and transfers.

Bakoven is quieter and closer to the water, and its small coves are sheltered by boulders. Camps Bay puts you closer to the restaurants and the main beach. The two sit side by side, so many guests stay in Bakoven and walk into Camps Bay for dinner.
When is the best time to visit Bakoven?
November to April is the main beach season, with long dry days and late sunsets. The south-easter wind can be strong in summer. Winter is cooler and wetter, but it brings fewer visitors and the chance of seeing whales.
Can you swim at Bakoven?
Yes, the sheltered coves and rock pools are pleasant for a dip and good for snorkelling. The Atlantic on this side of the Cape is cold even in midsummer, though, so most people swim briefly and spend longer on the rocks. Many of our properties also have their own pools.
