Villas and palazzo apartments between two lakes, with Roman ruins, Franciacorta vineyards and Lake Garda close by
As featured in
Most British visitors drive straight past Brescia on the way to Lake Garda, and the city has quietly benefited. It has the best-preserved Roman remains in northern Italy, a castle on the Cidneo hill, a round Romanesque cathedral and a Venetian square, yet it still feels like a working Lombard city rather than a stage set. It was Italian Capital of Culture in 2023, together with Bergamo.
Our Brescia collection runs to 60+ properties, from apartments in grand palazzi to country villas with pools and lake views, the largest with 11 bedrooms. Some are in and around the city, others on the hills towards Franciacorta and the lakes.
Here is how to choose your base, and how to spend the days once you are there.

Brescia's Roman forum is still the centre of town. The Capitolium, a temple built under the Emperor Vespasian, stands beside the ruins of a Roman theatre, and together with the monastery of San Salvatore and Santa Giulia it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Longobard sites of Italy.
The Santa Giulia museum is the place to spend a morning, and the bronze Vittoria Alata, the winged Victory, has returned to the Capitolium after a long restoration. Then walk to the Duomo Vecchio, a circular cathedral, and Piazza della Loggia, a reminder of nearly four centuries of Venetian rule. The castle above town makes a good evening stroll.

West of the city, the low hills of Franciacorta produce Italy's most admired sparkling wine, made by the same method as Champagne. The wineries welcome visitors for tastings, and the country lanes between them suit a slow afternoon by bicycle.
Beyond the vineyards lies Lake Iseo, smaller and far less busy than Garda. Ferries cross to Monte Isola, an inhabited island in the middle of the lake where fishing villages are linked by footpaths. At Clusane, on the southern shore, restaurants serve tinca al forno, baked tench with polenta, a dish the village is proud of.

The western shore of Lake Garda belongs to the province of Brescia, and it is around half an hour from the city by car. Salò has a long lakeside promenade, and at Gardone Riviera the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the house of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, is wonderfully eccentric, with a warship set into the hillside of its garden.
Further north, the old lemon houses of Gargnano and Limone recall the time when citrus grew on the lake. To the south, Sirmione sits on a narrow peninsula, with a moated castle and the ruins of a Roman villa at its tip.

Brescian cooking is hearty. Look for casoncelli, stuffed pasta finished with butter and sage, and spiedo bresciano, meats turned slowly on a spit for hours and served with polenta. Lake Garda olive oil and a glass of Franciacorta take care of the rest.
May, June and September are the best months, warm enough for the pool and the lakes without the August crowds. In June the Mille Miglia, the classic car rally, starts and finishes in the city, so book early if you want to be there. Our concierge can arrange winery visits, boat trips, restaurant tables and transfers.

May, June and September bring warm weather without the peak summer crowds on the lakes. The Mille Miglia fills the city each June, and late summer is harvest time in Franciacorta.
The Mille Miglia was a road race run from Brescia to Rome and back between 1927 and 1957. Today it is a classic car rally held each June, starting and finishing in Brescia, and the Museo Mille Miglia in the city tells its story.
