The Caicos Islands are the larger, western half of the Turks and Caicos, a British Overseas Territory south-east of the Bahamas. Most visitors stay on Providenciales, known to everyone as Provo, where the north shore curves into Grace Bay: a long sweep of soft white sand with a coral reef offshore keeping the water calm and very clear. English is the language, people drive on the left, and there is a direct flight from Heathrow, which makes it an easy kind of faraway.

The beach that put Provo on the map
Grace Bay is where most first-timers want to be, and they are not wrong. The sand is fine and pale, the sea is shallow and turquoise, and most of the island's best restaurants are within a short drive. Suites and penthouses here look straight out over the water.
The Bight, at the western end of the bay, is the older settlement and feels more lived-in. The reef off its beach is close enough to swim out to with a mask and snorkel. Every Thursday evening the Island Fish Fry fills Stubbs Diamond Plaza with conch fritters, grilled snapper, live music and a Junkanoo band, and locals turn up in numbers.
Kites, canals and the boat to North Caicos
Long Bay Hills, on the south-east side of the island, is quieter and roomier, with larger villas in generous plots. Long Bay Beach is shallow for a long way out and catches the steady trade winds, so on most afternoons you will see kitesurfers racing up and down it.
Leeward, at the eastern tip, is a neighbourhood of canals and marinas. Boats leave from here for Little Water Cay, where rock iguanas wander the boardwalks, and the passenger ferry crosses to North Caicos in around half an hour. A causeway carries on to Middle Caicos, with its limestone caves and the dramatic cliffs of Mudjin Harbour. It is a good day out with a hire car.
Chalk Sound and the quieter shore
Chalk Sound National Park, in the south-west, is a lagoon of almost unreal turquoise, dotted with small rocky islets. It is best seen from a kayak in the early morning. Nearby, Sapodilla Bay and Taylor Bay are shallow and sheltered, and young children can wade a long way out.
In the north-west, Wheeland and Blue Hills are among the island's older communities. Blue Hills has a row of beachside conch shacks where you eat with your feet in the sand. Villas out this way trade a little convenience for a lot more peace.

Conch is the national dish, and a national symbol too: it appears on the flag. It is served as a sharp, lime-dressed salad, cracked and fried, or in chowder and fritters. The Conch Festival in Blue Hills, usually held on a Saturday in late November, has local kitchens competing for the best version. Spiny lobster, grouper and peas and rice fill out most menus.
December to April brings dry, settled weather and the highest demand, so book early for Christmas and Easter.
