Villas between the rice fields and the surf, on Bali's black sand coast north of Seminyak
As featured in
Not so long ago Canggu was a scattering of villages, rice paddies and one or two surf breaks, and you came here only if you had a board on the roof. It has grown a good deal since then. Today it is a loose run of neighbourhoods along Bali's southwest coast, from Berawa up through Batu Bolong and Echo Beach to Pererenan and Seseh, with black sand beaches on one side and green paddies on the other, though the paddies are fewer every year.
Our Canggu collection runs to 43 villas, from compact walled villas a short walk from the beach to family compounds set among the rice fields and larger estates further inland towards Kaba Kaba, the biggest with up to 9 bedrooms.
This guide covers the neighbourhoods, the coast and the best months to come.

Kaba Kaba Estate Indonesia8 bedroomsBerawa and Batu Bolong for restaurants, beach clubs and surf, Pererenan and Seseh for a quieter stretch of coast, and the rice-field villages inland for space and seclusion.

Berawa and Batu Bolong are where Canggu is at its liveliest, with coffee shops, beach clubs, yoga studios and restaurants on almost every lane. Batu Bolong beach has gentle waves that suit learners, and there is a small Hindu temple right on the sand, where you will often see offerings laid out in the morning.
A villa here means you can walk to dinner and to the sea, which matters more than it sounds, because the narrow roads fill up with scooters by late afternoon. Seminyak, with its shops and smarter restaurants, is a short drive south.

Just west of Echo Beach, Pererenan has the good restaurants and cafés without quite so many people, and Seseh beyond it still has the feel of a Balinese village, with fishing boats pulled up on the black sand. Many of our larger villas are here or further inland, among the paddies around Kaba Kaba, where the evening sound is frogs rather than traffic.
The coast road continues to Tanah Lot, the sea temple built on a rock in the surf and linked to the sixteenth-century priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. It is busiest at sunset, and it is worth seeing then anyway.

Canggu makes a sensible base for seeing more of the island. Ubud, with its palace, craft villages and terraced valleys, is around an hour or more inland depending on traffic, and makes a good day out or a second stay. A driver is far better than hiring a car here, and our concierge can arrange one by the day, along with temple visits and early starts to beat the crowds.

Canggu eats well. Its cafés and restaurants are some of the best on the coast, but leave room for Balinese food too: babi guling, the spit-roast pork, sate lilit wrapped around lemongrass, and nasi campur from a local warung.
The dry season runs roughly from April to October, the best months for the beach and the surf. The wet months bring short, heavy downpours and very green paddies. Every 210 days, Galungan fills the village streets with tall bamboo penjor, and Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, usually in March, closes the whole island, airport included, after a night of ogoh-ogoh parades. Our concierge can help you plan around it, or plan for it.

With 43 properties in Canggu, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Private airport transfers, a driver by the day, surf lessons, temple visits to Tanah Lot, in-villa massage, nannies and restaurant reservations. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Berawa and Batu Bolong suit those who want to walk to restaurants, beach clubs and the surf. Pererenan and Seseh are quieter but still have good places to eat, and the villages inland among the rice fields offer the most space and privacy.
Ngurah Rai International Airport is around 20 kilometres away. The drive can take about 45 minutes in light traffic and an hour and a half or more at busy times, so we recommend a private transfer, which our concierge can arrange.
Nyepi is the Balinese day of silence, usually in March. The whole island stops for 24 hours, the airport closes and guests are asked to stay inside their villa. The evening before brings ogoh-ogoh parades, which are well worth seeing.
Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.
Across our 43 villas in Canggu, weekly rates typically range from £2,500 to £8,100, with the most affordable from around £1,500 a week and the largest estates well above. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.
April to October is the dry season and the best time for the beach and surfing. November to March is wetter, with short tropical downpours, fewer visitors and the rice fields at their greenest.
