A fishing port with a national park on its doorstep
Cassis is a small, steep fishing port built around its harbour like an amphitheatre, with Marseille to the west and La Ciotat to the east. On one side, the pale limestone inlets of the Calanques run off towards Marseille. On the other, Cap Canaille rises to 394 metres, the highest sea cliff in France. Vines run down the terraces between the two, and the town has made white wine for longer than most of Provence has made rosé.

Pastel quays and a beach in the middle of town
Cassis is small enough to cross on foot in a quarter of an hour. Most of that time goes on stopping. The harbour is lined with pastel façades and café terraces, fishing boats still tie up beside the tour boats, and the Bestouan beach, kept cool by a freshwater spring, sits just round the corner from the port.
Above the town, villas spread over the hillsides towards Port-Miou and the vineyards. Up there it is quieter, with longer views, though the walk back up after dinner is steep. In July and August the streets are busy and parking is scarce, so where you stay makes a real difference.

White limestone and water the colour of glass
The calanques are narrow, steep-sided inlets cut into the limestone between Cassis and Marseille. Since 2012 they have been protected as the Calanques National Park. Port-Miou, a long, boat-filled inlet, is a short walk from town. A coastal path leads on to Port-Pin, with its pines and pebble beach, and then to En-Vau, the most dramatic of the three. Wear proper shoes, because the path is rocky.
The easier way is by sea. Boats leave the harbour throughout the day and run along the cliffs. In summer the paths can be closed on days of high fire risk, so it is worth checking before you set out.
The Route des Crêtes, La Ciotat and Aix
East of town, the Route des Crêtes climbs over Cap Canaille towards La Ciotat. Its lookouts give you the whole bay, the port and the calanques. Come late in the day, when the ochre cliffs turn the colour of terracotta, and do not linger near the edge on a windy day.
Marseille is around half an hour away, for the Vieux-Port, the Mucem and a proper bouillabaisse. Aix-en-Provence is a little further inland, with the Cours Mirabeau and its markets.
Crisp whites, sea urchins and the fishermen's festival
Cassis became one of France's first appellations in 1936. Unusually for Provence, its estates make mostly white wine: dry, saline and well suited to grilled fish on the quay. Many domaines are within a short drive of the harbour.
The fishermen's festival, with a blessing of Saint Peter, fills the port on the last weekend of June. The wine festival follows in September, and the town also hosts the Vendanges Étoilées food festival, which brings in leading chefs. When is the best time to visit Cassis?
