Downtown Miami is where the city does its business, but it also has a lot of fun. In a single generation the old office district on Biscayne Bay has become a forest of residential towers, with Brickell's restaurants and rooftop bars at its southern end and a cluster of serious museums and concert halls to the north. Spanish is spoken as often as English, the coffee is Cuban and strong, and from most balconies you look straight out over the water towards Key Biscayne and Miami Beach.

Miami's financial district, with an appetite
Brickell starts on the south bank of the Miami River and runs along Brickell Avenue, lined with banks and apartment towers. By day it works. By evening it fills its terraces, steakhouses and omakase counters, and the shopping and dining at Brickell City Centre keep going late.
It is the liveliest base downtown, and the easiest place to get around without a car. The Metromover, a free automated train running above the streets, loops through Brickell and the downtown core, so you can reach the museums or a Miami Heat game at their bayside arena without ever looking for parking.

Art, science and the open bay
North of the river, the waterfront opens out. The Pérez Art Museum Miami, designed by Herzog and de Meuron, has hanging gardens on its veranda and a terrace café looking over the bay, and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science stands next door in Museum Park. A little further on is the Arsht, Miami's performing arts complex, for opera, ballet and touring shows.
Along Biscayne Boulevard, the Freedom Tower of 1925 once processed thousands of Cuban exiles and is a reminder of how much modern Miami owes to them. Bayfront Park hosts the Ultra Music Festival each March, which is worth knowing, either to join in or to plan a quieter weekend elsewhere.

Little Havana, Vizcaya and the beaches
Calle Ocho in Little Havana is a few minutes west. Old men play dominoes in Máximo Gómez Park and the coffee windows serve cafecito all day. To the south, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the Italianate winter house James Deering built on the bay, leads on to the leafy streets of Coconut Grove.
Across the Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne has quiet beaches and the old lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Miami Beach, with its Art Deco Historic District, is across the MacArthur Causeway, usually less than half an hour away.
Stone crabs, ceviche and a winter in the sun
Downtown eats like the Americas in miniature: Cuban sandwiches and croquetas, Peruvian ceviche, Venezuelan arepas and some very polished modern kitchens in Brickell. Stone crab season starts in mid-October, and it is a good reason to plan a visit around it.
December to April is the high season, warm and mostly dry, with Miami Art Week in early December drawing the international art crowd. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon storms, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
