Italy's kitchen, and a good deal more besides

Emilia-Romagna gave the world Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar from Modena and tortellini. People tend to come for the food and then find there is much more to the region. It has Bologna, a red-brick university city with miles of covered porticoes. It has the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna, a long Adriatic coast and the quiet Apennine hills, where the villages still close for lunch.

Our Emilia-Romagna collection runs to 45 homes. There are elegant apartments and penthouses in Bologna's historic quarters, sea-view apartments with pools above Rimini, country houses in the hills of Forlì-Cesena, and larger villas near Parma and in the Piacenza hills.

Below is a guide to where to stay, what to eat and when to come.

Where to stay in Emilia-Romagna

Bologna for food, architecture and city life, Rimini for the Adriatic, Ravenna for mosaics and Dante, and the Forlì-Cesena hills for quiet country and Sangiovese.

Bologna

Porticoes, towers and a long lunch

Bologna is called la dotta, la grassa e la rossa: the learned, the fat and the red. The learning comes from its university, founded in 1088 and usually counted as the oldest in the Western world. The fat is the food and the red is the brickwork. Its porticoes, roughly forty kilometres of them within the city, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2021.

The longest portico climbs to the Sanctuary of San Luca on its hill above the city, and it makes a fine morning walk. After that, the narrow lanes of the Quadrilatero, behind Piazza Maggiore, are where to buy mortadella, cheese and fresh pasta. Apartments in the old centre and on the slopes towards San Luca put you within a short stroll of all of it.

Ravenna & Rimini

Byzantine gold and the Adriatic

Ravenna was once capital of the Western Roman Empire, and its early Christian monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosaics in San Vitale and the small Mausoleum of Galla Placidia are some of the finest anywhere. Dante is buried here too, in a modest tomb near the church of San Francesco.

Rimini, further down the coast, is better known for its long beaches, but its old town is worth an evening. It has the Arch of Augustus, the Roman bridge of Tiberius and a museum given over to Federico Fellini, who was born in the city. San Marino is a short drive inland.

The Hills

Apennine villages and medieval towns

Inland, the country rises towards the Apennines. In Forlì-Cesena the villages are small and the roads wind, with Sangiovese vineyards around Bertinoro and walking in the Foreste Casentinesi National Park above Tredozio. Cesena's Malatestiana Library has stood since the fifteenth century and is well worth a visit.

To the west, the hills of Parma and Piacenza make good country for a villa. Castell'Arquato is a medieval village above vineyards, and Verdi's birthplace at Busseto is close by. Parma itself is an elegant small city with a fine opera house and Correggio's painted cathedral dome.

Food & the Seasons

Ragù, piadina and a golden autumn

Every province here feeds you differently. Bologna has tagliatelle al ragù and tortellini in brodo, Parma has its ham and culatello, and Modena has its aged balsamic. On the Romagna side, the staple is piadina, a flatbread folded around cheese and greens, eaten with a glass of Sangiovese.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Bologna can be very hot in midsummer, while July and August belong to the coast. Autumn brings the white truffle fair at Sant'Agata Feltria in October and the Verdi Festival in Parma. Our concierge can arrange cheese and ham producer visits, cookery classes and restaurant tables.

Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
