Villas in Hilton Head

Live oaks, wide beaches and the Heritage at Harbour Town

Hilton Head is a barrier island at the southern tip of South Carolina, shaped roughly like a shoe. It has around 12 miles of beach on the Atlantic, with salt marsh and tidal creeks behind. Its building rules are strict about trees, so live oaks and Spanish moss still shade much of the island, and you will see more of them than you will see neon. Golfers know it for Harbour Town, where the RBC Heritage is played every April.

Our Hilton Head collection runs to 70+ villas. You can choose a family house in Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes, a villa looking over Broad Creek or Calibogue Sound, or a smaller apartment on the golf course. Most have private pools, and some come with hot tubs, sea views or direct access to the beach.

What follows covers the island from one end to the other, with notes on the food and the seasons.

Where to stay in Hilton Head

Sea Pines for Harbour Town and the quiet south end, Palmetto Dunes for the beach and golf, Broad Creek and Skull Creek for water views and sunsets, with Charleston a day trip away.

Sea Pines & the South End

A striped lighthouse and Pete Dye's fairways

The southern tip of the island is taken up by Sea Pines, a gated resort laid out under the pines and oaks. Its centre is Harbour Town, a marina with the red and white lighthouse beside it. The Harbour Town Golf Links, designed by Pete Dye with help from Jack Nicklaus, finishes beside Calibogue Sound, and the closing holes are among the best known in American golf.

The Sea Pines Forest Preserve covers more than 600 acres of trails, lakes and wildlife, so it is easy to forget the beach is only a few minutes away. Across the sound lies Daufuskie Island. There is no bridge, only the boat, and that keeps it slow.

Palmetto Dunes & Broad Creek

Mid-island beaches and evenings on the water

Palmetto Dunes, in the middle of the island, has three golf courses, a long stretch of ocean beach and calm lagoons for a morning in a kayak. Shelter Cove, next door, has a marina and waterfront restaurants. Villas here suit families who want the beach, the bikes and the first tee all close by.

Broad Creek runs deep into the island from the west. Villas facing it look out over marsh rather than sea, and the sunsets are better for it. Dolphin trips and fishing charters leave from the marinas. When the tide is low, the hard sand on the ocean side is firm enough to cycle along, and that is how many locals use the beach.

Gullah History & the North End

Mitchelville, marsh and a day in Charleston

Hilton Head has a longer story than its resorts. Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park recalls a town founded during the Civil War by people who had escaped slavery. The Coastal Discovery Museum explains the island's Gullah culture, its marshes and its wildlife. Just off the island, on the causeway, the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge has quiet trails through salt marsh and maritime forest.

On the north end, Skull Creek has seafood restaurants on the docks, which are good places to watch the sun go down. Savannah is under an hour away by road. Charleston, with its antebellum houses and serious restaurants, makes a longer day out.

Food & the Seasons

Shrimp boats, she-crab soup and a long, warm year

Lowcountry cooking is generous and unfussy. Expect local shrimp, she-crab soup, oysters in the cooler months, and the Lowcountry boil, a pot of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes tipped out onto the table. Spring brings the Heritage in mid-April, when the island is close to full and villas go early. Summer is hot and humid, with the beach at its best. Autumn is warm, quieter and good for golf, though hurricane season runs from June to November. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches in summer, so beachfront lights are kept low at night. Our concierge can book tee times, bikes, boat trips and dinner tables.

Why book your Hilton Head villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Hilton Head's villas range from oceanfront houses to homes on the marsh and on the golf course, and we know which gated communities are a short walk or cycle from the beach. With 70+ properties in Hilton Head, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Tee times at Harbour Town and Palmetto Dunes, bike hire, dolphin trips and fishing charters, the boat to Daufuskie, restaurant reservations and airport transfers. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
