Turn off Sunset Boulevard at Crescent Heights and within a minute or two the city falls away. Laurel Canyon Boulevard climbs and twists through sycamore, eucalyptus and scrub oak towards Mulholland Drive, with houses perched on stilts and terraces above it. In the late 1960s this was where Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Frank Zappa and Jim Morrison lived within a short walk of one another, and the canyon still has a slightly bohemian, unbuttoned air.

The lower canyon for quick access to West Hollywood and the Strip, the upper canyon and Mulholland for seclusion and views, Nichols Canyon and the Hollywood Hills for walks, and Studio City over the ridge for the Valley.
One winding road, and a lot of quiet either side
Laurel Canyon Boulevard is the spine of the place, a commuter route between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley that runs from Sunset up to Mulholland Drive and down again to Studio City. Step off it onto Lookout Mountain Avenue, Wonderland Avenue or any of the narrow lanes that climb into the hills and it becomes remarkably peaceful, with hawks overhead and coyotes at dusk.
Houses in the lower canyon put the restaurants of West Hollywood within a few minutes' drive. Higher up, towards Mulholland, the lots get bigger, the views wider and the evenings quieter. We can tell you which streets are easy to drive and park on, which matters more here than you might expect.

Where the creatures meet
Halfway up the boulevard, at Kirkwood Drive, the Canyon Country Store has been the neighbourhood's meeting place for generations. Jim Morrison lived just behind it on Rothdell Trail and put it into the Doors song Love Street. Mama Cass spent time in the basement, and the walls are hung with photographs of the canyon's famous residents.
Graham Nash wrote Our House about the home he shared with Joni Mitchell on Lookout Mountain Avenue, and her album Ladies of the Canyon took its name from the neighbourhood. It is still a good place to pick up coffee, a sandwich and a bottle of wine for the terrace.

Ridge roads, hill walks and the Strip
Mulholland Drive runs along the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains with views over the city on one side and the Valley on the other. Runyon Canyon, a short drive east, is the classic Hollywood hike, with the sign and the downtown towers in view from the top, and Laurel Canyon Park on Mulholland is where the neighbourhood walks its dogs.
At the foot of the canyon, the Sunset Strip has its music venues, bars and the Chateau Marmont. The Hollywood Bowl is close for summer concerts, and Malibu's beaches are a reasonable drive on a good day.

Sushi over the hill, and warm evenings for most of the year
Laurel Canyon has few restaurants of its own, which is part of its appeal. West Hollywood, along Sunset and Melrose, is minutes away for dinner, and over the ridge in Studio City the stretch of Ventura Boulevard known as Sushi Row is a local favourite. On Sundays the Studio City and Hollywood farmers' markets are good for stocking the kitchen.
Los Angeles is warm and dry for most of the year. Spring brings green hills and, in late spring, jacaranda in bloom, while May and June can start grey and cool before the sun burns through.
