Old Paris, saved by neglect
The name means marsh, and that is what this stretch of the Right Bank was until it was drained in the Middle Ages. By the seventeenth century it was the smartest address in Paris, lined with the stone hôtels particuliers of the nobility. Then the court left for Versailles, the aristocrats followed, and the Marais slid into a long, useful decline. Baron Haussmann's boulevards passed it by, and in the 1960s it became one of the first quarters protected under André Malraux's conservation law. What survives is the most intact piece of pre-revolutionary Paris in the city.

A royal square and a writer's front door
The Place des Vosges began life in 1612 as the Place Royale, and it is the oldest planned square in Paris: red brick and pale stone, vaulted arcades, and a garden of lime trees where Parisians read the papers on a Sunday. Victor Hugo lived at number 6, and his apartment is now a museum.
Slip through the hidden passage at the square's southwest corner and you come out in the garden of the Hôtel de Sully, one of the grandest of the old mansions. From here the streets around Saint-Paul run down towards the Seine, and the Pont Marie crosses to Île Saint-Louis for an ice cream and a stroll along the quays.
Picasso, Paris history and a cabinet of curiosities
The Marais keeps its best collections inside its old houses. The Musée Picasso fills the Hôtel Salé, built for a collector of the salt tax, which explains the name. The Musée Carnavalet tells the story of Paris itself across two hôtels particuliers, and its permanent collections are free.
Smaller pleasures are close by. The Musée Cognacq-Jay is a jewel box of eighteenth-century painting and furniture, and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature is one of the most eccentric museums in Paris, with more wit than its name suggests. The Archives Nationales occupy the Hôtel de Soubise, whose rococo salons are worth the visit on their own.

Falafel queues, galleries and a very old market
Rue des Rosiers is the heart of the Pletzl, the Yiddish name for the old Jewish quarter, where the queues for falafel stretch down the street at lunchtime and the bakeries sell challah and strudel. The Mémorial de la Shoah, a few streets south, is a sober and important visit.
North of rue des Francs-Bourgeois, the Haut Marais is quieter and more fashionable, full of contemporary art galleries and small independent boutiques. On rue de Bretagne, the Marché des Enfants Rouges dates back to the early seventeenth century and is the oldest covered market in Paris. Eat at its counters rather than shopping for a picnic.
When to come, and where to eat
The Marais is good in any month, but spring and early autumn are the best: warm enough for a terrace, cool enough for long walks. Paris celebrates the Fête de la Musique on 21 June, when bands play on street corners, and Nuit Blanche in early October keeps galleries and courtyards open through the night. In August many Parisians leave town and some restaurants close, though the quarter stays lively.
