Lakes, golf and a short run to the parks
Windermere sits on the Butler Chain of Lakes, a string of clear lakes linked by canals, and it is the closest of the smart residential areas to the Disney parks. Winter Garden next door has a restored old main street with a Saturday farmers' market.
Close by, Sand Lake Road in Dr. Phillips is lined with some of Orlando's better restaurants, and the Bay Hill club hosts the Arnold Palmer Invitational each March. For families, this corner of the county keeps the drive to the parks short and the evenings calm.

Winter Park is the grown-up surprise of central Florida: a nineteenth-century resort town of brick streets, Rollins College and Park Avenue, lined with cafés and independent shops. The Morse Museum holds the world's largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany's work, including the chapel he designed for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
The Scenic Boat Tour, running since 1938, takes you through the lakes and narrow canals past lakeside mansions. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival fills the town each March. Maitland, just north, has an art centre in an unusual Mayan Revival style.
Cold springs, wild rivers and rockets
North of Orlando, Wekiwa Springs State Park covers around 7,000 acres near Apopka. Its spring pours out clear water at a constant 22°C or so, a welcome plunge in August, and the Wekiva River that flows from it is a lovely paddle among herons, turtles and the odd alligator.
Cape Canaveral, with its rocket launches and space museum, is around an hour east, and the Atlantic beaches of the Space Coast are about the same distance. Kissimmee, to the south, has a large choice of villas close to the Disney parks.

Orlando has had a Michelin Guide since 2022, and the dining here now goes well beyond theme park burgers, from Sand Lake Road to the market halls and small restaurants of the Mills 50 and Audubon Park neighbourhoods. Epcot's Food and Wine Festival runs from late summer into the autumn.
Spring and late autumn bring the most comfortable weather. Summer is hot and humid, with short, dramatic thunderstorms most afternoons, and the hurricane season runs from June to November.
