Chalets from Megève and the Portes du Soleil to the Aravis and Mont Blanc, with Lake Annecy for the summer
As featured in
Upper Savoy, or Haute-Savoie as the French have it, is the corner of the Alps nearest to Geneva and, for a British skier, perhaps the easiest to love. It holds Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, along with the old-money village of Megève, the farmhouse resorts of the Portes du Soleil and the Aravis valleys, where reblochon is still made on the farms. It also holds Lake Annecy, which turns a winter destination into a summer one.
Our Upper Savoy collection runs to 170+ properties. You will find ski chalets in Morzine and Les Gets with hot tubs and saunas, apartments in Megève close to the lifts, family chalets around Le Grand-Bornand and Saint-Jean-de-Sixt, and large chalets of up to 8 bedrooms with pools and spas.
Below is a guide to the valleys, how they differ and when each is at its best.

Chalet Biollay Manigod: Spacious 4-Bedroom Ski Chalet Rental with Mountain Views – Upper Savoy4 bedrooms
Chalet Aravis Savoy: Luxury 8-Bedroom Ski Chalet with Stunning Aravis Views – Upper Savoy8 bedroomsMegève for elegance and long lunches, Morzine and Les Gets for the vast Portes du Soleil, Chamonix for serious mountains, the Aravis for farmhouse villages and Annecy for the lake.

Megève was turned into a ski resort in the 1920s by the Rothschild family, who wanted a French answer to St Moritz, and it has kept its polish ever since. The medieval centre is car-free, horse-drawn sleighs wait by the church, and the wooded slopes of Mont d'Arbois and Rochebrune give gentle, scenic skiing with long lunches on the way down.
Our chalets here range from apartments near the Rochebrune lifts to large chalets above the village with pools and spas. It is the place to choose if the evenings matter as much as the pistes.

Morzine is a proper market town with a slate-roofed church and old farmhouses, and it sits in the Portes du Soleil, a ski area of around 600 kilometres of pistes that stretches over the border into Switzerland. Les Gets, a short hop away, is quieter and especially good for families, and it has a museum of mechanical music that children tend to remember.
Both are among the closest major resorts to Geneva, which makes them easy for a long weekend. They are just as lively in summer, when the lifts carry mountain bikers and walkers instead of skiers.

The Aravis villages of Le Grand-Bornand and La Clusaz, with Saint-Jean-de-Sixt between them, are where Savoyard farm life carries on alongside the skiing. Reblochon is made in these valleys, and a farm visit followed by a tartiflette is a very good way to spend an afternoon.
Half an hour or so down the road, Annecy has canals running through its old town and a lake that is said to be among the cleanest in Europe. In summer people swim, sail and cycle the shore, and the town makes a calm base in any season.

Savoyard cooking is mountain food: tartiflette, fondue, raclette, diots sausages cooked in white wine and the cheeses of the alpine pastures. Annecy's International Animation Film Festival brings the town to life in June, and in autumn the herds come down from the summer pastures to celebrations in the villages.
The ski season runs from December to April, and January is usually the quietest month on the slopes. From June to September the lakes, the walking and the cooler mountain air make a very good case for summer. Our concierge can arrange transfers, mountain guides, restaurant tables and a chef for the evenings.
