Sea-view villas with pools on the sandy coast west of Chania, facing the kri-kri island of Thodorou
As featured in
Agia Marina sits on the north coast of western Crete, around ten kilometres west of Chania, where a long sandy beach runs on into Platanias and the islet of Thodorou rises offshore like a sleeping beast. Breakwaters keep the water calm for swimming even when the wind gets up. In the hills behind, the old village of Pano Agia Marina still has its Cretan houses and family tavernas.
Our Agia Marina collection runs to 60+ villas and apartments. Most look out to sea from the slopes above the coast, and they spread west through Gerani and Tavronitis towards Kolymbari, and inland towards Galatas. Many have private pools, a few have hot tubs, and the largest sleep big family parties.
Here is how to choose your spot, what to do and when to come.

Villa Meltemi AgiaMarina: Spacious 9-Bedroom Apartment with Sea Views – Agia Marina Crete9 bedroomsAgia Marina itself for the beach and an easy run into Chania, the hillside above it for sea views, Gerani and Platanias next door, and the quieter coast towards Kolymbari and Kissamos for the wilder west.

The beach at Agia Marina stretches for more than two and a half kilometres. It is gently shelving and has plenty going on: sunbeds, watersports, cafés and tavernas, and in summer a busy evening along the coast road. It runs straight into Platanias, and it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
A short climb uphill changes the mood completely. Pano Agia Marina, the original village, is quiet and whitewashed, and most of our villas sit on these slopes, looking north across the bay to Thodorou. Gerani, a little further west, is quieter still and closer to the stream valleys that run down from the hills.

Thodorou, the islet facing the beach, is a nature reserve and one of the last refuges of the kri-kri, Crete's wild goat. Landing is forbidden except on the feast of Agioi Theodoroi in early June. The rest of the year, boats from Chania and Platanias sail around it, and with luck you will see goats picking their way along the cliffs.
About a kilometre and a half south of the village, the Nerospilia cave has stalactites, stalagmites and a long history: it was used as a place of worship in Minoan times. The two together make a good short outing for children, with time for a swim afterwards.

Chania is a twenty-minute drive east, and an evening on its Venetian harbour, with the lighthouse, the old mosque and the lanes of the old town behind, is reason enough to stay this side of the island. Galatas, on the hills between, saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Battle of Crete in May 1941.
Head west and you reach Kolymbari, with the seventeenth-century monastery of Gonia above the sea, and then Kissamos, the base for boat trips to the Balos lagoon. Falasarna and its long western beach make a fine day out, best timed for the sunset.
Explore Chania
Western Crete eats well and without fuss. Look for boureki, the Chania bake of courgette, potato and soft cheese, along with dakos, little kalitsounia pies and staka, a rich buttery cream eaten with eggs or bread. Lunch ends with a small glass of tsikoudia, which no one will let you refuse.
The beach season runs from May to October. September is the pick, with a warm sea and quieter roads. The village celebrates its saint on 17 July. In spring the nearby Lake Agia is good for birdwatching, and the Samaria Gorge makes a long, rewarding day from the Omalos plateau. Our concierge can arrange boat trips, gorge transfers, car hire and tables in Chania.

Boat trips around Thodorou and to Balos, transfers for the Samaria Gorge, car hire, restaurant tables in Chania and transfers from Chania airport. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Stay on the hillside above the beach for sea views and a quieter evening while still being close to the sand. Gerani and the coast west towards Kolymbari are more peaceful, and properties near the coast road put the tavernas and Platanias within walking distance.
May to October is the beach season, with July and August the hottest and busiest months. June and September have warm seas and fewer people, and spring is best for walking and wild flowers.
Only once a year. The islet is a nature reserve for the kri-kri wild goat, and landing is allowed only on the feast of Agioi Theodoroi in early June. Boat trips sail around it throughout the summer.
