Temple offerings, surf and rice terraces, all on one island

Bali is a Hindu island in a mostly Muslim country, and you notice it within an hour of landing. Every morning small palm-leaf offerings appear on doorsteps, shop counters and the dashboards of taxis, each with a few petals and a stick of incense. Inland, rice terraces climb towards volcanoes. On the south coast you find surf beaches and limestone cliffs, and the long, sociable sunsets the island is known for.

We have 260+ villas on the island, most of them in the southwest. You can choose from joglo-style houses of carved timber in Seminyak, contemporary pool villas among the rice fields of Canggu and Dalung, and clifftop houses with sea views on the Bukit peninsula. There are also fewer, quieter retreats above the river gorges near Ubud. Nearly all have private pools, and several have their own spa rooms.

This is a guide to the areas, the seasons and a few local customs worth knowing before you go.

Where to stay in Bali

Seminyak for restaurants, shops and beach clubs; Canggu and Dalung for surf and rice-field views; Uluwatu for dramatic cliffs and quieter beaches; and Ubud for temples, craft villages and the green interior.

Seminyak, Canggu & Dalung

Beach clubs at sundown, rice fields at breakfast

Seminyak is the island's most polished stretch of coast. Around Petitenget and along Jalan Kayu Aya, known as Eat Street, you'll find good restaurants, small boutiques and beach clubs where the main event is the sunset. Villas here are close to everything, which is the point, and the price is some traffic.

Canggu, a little further up the coast, began as a surf village and has kept something of that mood, with board-carrying scooters, café breakfasts and black-sand breaks at Echo Beach and Batu Bolong. Inland, Dalung and the edges of Mengwi are quieter, and many villas there look out over paddy fields. The sea temple of Tanah Lot, on its rock offshore, is an easy evening trip.

Uluwatu & the Bukit

Limestone cliffs and a temple above the waves

The Bukit peninsula, at the island's southern tip, is drier and more rugged than the rest of Bali, and it suits villas with long sea views. Below the cliffs are small beaches such as Padang Padang and Bingin, reached by steep steps, and some of the best-known surf breaks in Asia.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu, a sea temple on the clifftop, is the place to watch the Kecak fire dance at sunset, with the macaque monkeys looking on and occasionally lifting a pair of sunglasses. Jimbaran Bay, on the peninsula's western side, is famous for seafood grilled over coconut husks and eaten at tables on the sand.

Ubud & the Interior

Gorges, craft villages and terraced green

Ubud is the cultural heart of the island, with palace dance performances, art museums, the Sacred Monkey Forest and villages nearby that are known for woodcarving, silverwork and painting. Villas along the Sayan ridge look down into the jungle of the Ayung river gorge, and it is cooler up here than on the coast.

The rice terraces at Tegallalang are close by. Further afield, the terraces at Jatiluwih and the royal water temple of Taman Ayun in Mengwi belong to Bali's subak landscape, the ancient system of shared irrigation that UNESCO added to its World Heritage list in 2012. For early risers, the sunrise walk up Mount Batur is worth the alarm call.

Food, Festivals & the Seasons

Suckling pig, slow-cooked duck and a day of silence

The dish to seek out is babi guling, spit-roasted suckling pig with spiced crackling, usually eaten at lunchtime at a local warung. Bebek betutu, duck wrapped in leaves and cooked slowly with spices, often has to be ordered a day ahead. Sate lilit, minced fish pressed onto lemongrass stalks, turns up everywhere.

The dry season, from April to October, is the time for beaches and walking. The wet months bring short, heavy downpours, greener rice fields and fewer visitors. Look out for Galungan, which comes round every 210 days, when tall decorated bamboo poles line the village streets. Our concierge can book chefs, temple guides, spa treatments and transfers.

Why book your Bali villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Bali's traffic can make a short distance take a long time, so we help you choose a villa that is close to what you actually want, be it a beach, a surf break or the rice terraces of Ubud. With 260+ properties in Bali, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Private chefs, airport transfers, drivers for day trips, temple and rice terrace guides, surf lessons, spa treatments at your villa and tables at Seminyak's restaurants and beach clubs. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best area to stay in Bali?

Seminyak is best for restaurants, shopping and beach clubs. Canggu and Dalung suit surfers and anyone who wants rice-field views. Uluwatu is for clifftop sea views and quieter beaches. Ubud is the choice for culture, walking and the green interior. Many guests split a stay between the coast and Ubud.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

April to October is the dry season and the most reliable time for beaches, surfing and walking. July and August are the busiest months. November to March is the wet season, when the landscape is greener and showers tend to be heavy but short.

What happens during Nyepi in Bali?

Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, marks the Hindu new year and usually falls in March. For 24 hours nobody goes out on the streets, lights are kept low and the airport closes, so guests stay at their villa. The evening before, villages parade huge ogoh-ogoh effigies through the streets, which is well worth seeing.

Can you arrange a private chef at a villa in Bali?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury villa in Bali cost?

Across our 260+ villas in Bali, weekly rates typically range from £1,900 to £5,300, with the most affordable from around £1,100 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Bali from the UK?

There are no direct flights from the UK. Most travellers fly with one stop, often in Singapore, Doha or Dubai, to Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar. Traffic permitting, Seminyak and Uluwatu are usually under an hour from the airport and Ubud is around 90 minutes. Our concierge can arrange private transfers.

Are there villas in Bali for large groups?

Yes. Our Bali collection includes properties with up to 12 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
