A Roman city between the harbour and the Downs

Chichester is a small city that does a lot. It has a Roman street plan, a medieval cathedral whose spire you can see from out at sea, a festival theatre with a national reputation and a fine gallery of modern British art. Chichester Harbour, with its creeks, sailing villages and wading birds, lies to the west, and the South Downs rise just to the north.

Our Chichester collection runs to 36 properties. They range from small cottages and apartments for two to large family houses with pools, hot tubs and sea views, spread between the harbour villages, the country around Goodwood and the coast towards Arundel.

Here is where to stay, what to do and when to come.

The City

Walls, a spire and a very good theatre

Chichester's four main streets still follow the Roman plan and meet at the Market Cross, which dates from around 1501. You can walk much of the old city walls in an hour or so, with views over the rooftops to the cathedral.

Pallant House Gallery holds one of the best collections of modern British art outside London. The Chichester Festival Theatre, opened in 1962, draws London audiences down for its summer season. Fishbourne Roman Palace, just west of the city, has the largest collection of Roman mosaics in situ in Britain, and was the home of someone very important indeed.

The Harbour

Creeks, sails and King Canute's tide

Chichester Harbour is a protected National Landscape of tidal creeks, mudflats and salt marsh, and one of the great sailing waters of southern England. Bosham, where legend has Canute ordering back the waves, has a Saxon church shown in the famous Bayeux embroidery of the Norman Conquest, and a lane that floods at high tide. Parked cars are regularly caught out.

Dell Quay and Itchenor are good for a pint by the water and a boat trip around the harbour. At its mouth, West Wittering has a long sandy beach and the dunes of East Head, cared for by the National Trust.

Goodwood & the Downs

Racing, chalk hills and ancient yews

The Goodwood estate, just north of the city, hosts three of the great fixtures of the English summer. The Festival of Speed comes in July, Glorious Goodwood racing in late July or early August, and the Revival, when everyone dresses in period clothes, in September. Houses nearby are booked early for all three.

Above Goodwood, the South Downs offer chalk ridge walks with views to the sea and the Isle of Wight. Kingley Vale has some of the oldest yew trees in Britain. Arundel, with its castle and antique shops, is a short drive east.

Food & the Seasons

Selsey crab, Sussex fizz and a long summer

The table here owes a lot to the sea and the chalk. Look for Selsey crab and lobster, Downland lamb, and the English sparkling wines now made on the slopes of the South Downs, many of them open for tastings.

May to September is the main season for sailing, the beach and the theatre. The Goodwood fixtures make July and September the busiest months. Spring and autumn are lovely for walking the Downs and watching birds on the harbour. Our concierge can arrange vineyard visits, sailing, restaurant tables and Goodwood tickets.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
