Villas in Cogolin

A working Provençal village at the head of the gulf

Cogolin is the village people drive through on the way to Saint-Tropez, and the ones who stop learn something useful. It is a real place, with a medieval clock tower, a Saturday market under the plane trees and craftsmen who still make briar pipes, hand-woven carpets and reeds for clarinets and saxophones. Saint-Tropez is around ten kilometres away. Cogolin is quieter, and a good deal more Provençal.

Our Cogolin collection runs to 24 villas, from two-bedroom houses with a pool and garden to Provençal bastides in the hills towards Grimaud, and one large estate that sleeps a whole wedding party. Most sit in the green valley between the village and the sea, among vineyards and cork oaks.

Here is a guide to the village, the coast below it and the best months to come.

The Village

Pipes, carpets and a silver cockerel

Cogolin grew up around a small rounded hill, and the old quarter behind the town hall is a cluster of steep lanes, stone porches and the clock tower. The church of Saint-Sauveur dates largely from the fifteenth century.

What sets the place apart is its craft. The Courrieu pipe works, founded in 1802, carves briar from the tree heath of the Maures and stamps each pipe with the village cockerel. Visits are free. The carpet manufactory has woven by hand since the 1920s, and the Rigotti workshop turns Provençal cane into reeds for wind players around the world.

Market days are Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and the Saturday market is the one to plan a week around.

Les Marines & the Gulf

Four kilometres of plain, then the sea

The commune runs down a flat plain to the water at Les Marines de Cogolin, a modern marina built around four basins, next door to the canals of Port Grimaud. The beach here is a long strip of sand with a sailing centre and two waterside restaurants, and it suits families who want shallow water and no fuss.

Sainte-Maxime sits across the bay, and in summer the boats over to Saint-Tropez are by far the most civilised way to arrive. They save you the gulf road at its worst.

Around the Peninsula

Hill villages and Pampelonne

Cogolin makes an easy base for the whole Saint-Tropez peninsula. Grimaud, with its ruined castle and lanes of bougainvillea, is a few minutes up the road. Ramatuelle, a walled hill village above the vineyards, looks down on the beach clubs of Pampelonne, and La Croix-Valmer has some of the gulf's least spoilt coves along the coast path.

Inland, the walking trails of the Massif des Maures start almost at the edge of the village, through chestnut and cork oak forest.

Food, Wine & the Seasons

Côtes de Provence rosé and the turn of the year

The valley is planted with Côtes de Provence vines, and several estates around Cogolin welcome visitors for a tasting. The markets supply the rest: melons, tapenade, goat's cheese, and figs by late summer.

July and August are hot, busy and expensive on the roads, so June and September are the sweet spot for a beach holiday. Saint-Tropez celebrates its Bravade each May, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez brings classic yachts to the gulf in late September and early October. Our concierge can arrange wine tastings, boat charter, restaurant tables and transfers.

A concierge who knows the territory

Boat trips to Saint-Tropez, yacht charter, wine tastings in the valley, beach club and restaurant reservations, car hire and transfers from Toulon or Nice. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
