Northern Finland asks very little of you. Pull on a good coat and walk into the forest, take the sauna, roll in the snow if you are brave, then go back outside and watch the sky turn green. In winter the snow is deep and dry, and the light is a soft blue at midday. In summer the sun barely sets.

Levi, the fells and a very short transfer
Levi, in the municipality of Kittilä, is the most sociable place in Finnish Lapland. It is a proper resort village with lifts that start from the centre, restaurants, a spa and a calendar of winter events. Kittilä airport is only around 15 kilometres away, so you can land in the afternoon and be in the sauna by dusk.
Beyond the village the land opens out into rounded fells and spruce forest. Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is within reach for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, and long walks across the open tops in summer.

A capital on the Circle, and a man in red
Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, sits right on the Arctic Circle. Santa Claus Village, just outside town, is where families come in December, and it delivers exactly what the children expect. Arktikum, the science centre and museum, is the place to understand the Arctic and the people who live in it.
The town was rebuilt after the Second World War to a plan by Alvar Aalto, laid out in the shape of reindeer antlers. Our properties here range from glass-roofed suites made for watching the aurora from bed to roomy apartments for larger families.

Rapids, hanging bridges and the Bear's Ring
Kuusamo lies just south of the Arctic Circle in the region of Koillismaa, a land of lakes, rivers and forested hills. Ruka, its ski resort, has a long season and a good village, and is a sound choice for families who want proper skiing with wilderness right on the doorstep.
The great walk is the Karhunkierros, the Bear's Ring, a trail of around 80 kilometres through Oulanka National Park, past rapids and over swaying suspension bridges. Shorter stretches make very good day walks, and the Kiutaköngäs rapids are an easy outing.

Polar night, midnight sun and cloudberry jam
The aurora season runs from around late August to early April, and you need clear, dark skies. Midwinter brings kaamos, the polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon in the far north and the snow glows blue. Around midsummer it never quite gets dark. Early September brings ruska, when the fells turn red and gold.
Finnish sauna culture has been on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage since 2020, and you will see why. At the table, try sautéed reindeer with mash and lingonberries, Arctic char, and leipäjuusto, a squeaky baked cheese served warm with cloudberry jam. Levi, in Kittilä, is best for skiing, restaurants and a quick airport transfer. Rovaniemi suits families coming for Christmas and the Arctic Circle. Kuusamo and Ruka are good for lakes, walking and Oulanka National Park, and Inari for remote wilderness and Sámi culture.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Finland?
The aurora season in Lapland runs from around late August to early April. Clear, dark nights are what matter most, and the further north you stay, and the further from any town lights, the better your chances.
Is Lapland a good choice for a family Christmas?
Very much so. December brings snow, husky and reindeer rides and Santa Claus Village near Rovaniemi. It is the busiest time of year, though, so book a villa and your excursions well ahead.

In winter there are direct flights from several UK airports to Kittilä, for Levi, and to Rovaniemi, taking around three and a half hours. For the rest of the year, or for Kuusamo and Ivalo, fly via Helsinki. Our concierge can arrange transfers.
