Villas at the northern tip of Saint Lucia, between a busy marina, a fortified island and the Atlantic shore
As featured in
At its northern tip, Saint Lucia narrows to a ridge of green hills with the calm Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic surf on the other. Gros Islet is the name of the district covering all of it, and of the old fishing village at its heart, where the grills are lit every Friday after sunset and the whole island seems to arrive for supper.
Our Gros Islet collection runs to 45 properties: hillside villas in Cap Estate with views over both seas, villas above the wild bay at Cas-en-Bas, and waterside townhouses and suites around Rodney Bay, where you can walk to dinner. The largest sleep big families comfortably.
Here is how the north fits together, and when to come.

Rodney Bay is the liveliest corner of the north, and the most convenient. Its marina is one of the main yachting harbours of the eastern Caribbean, and each December it fills with boats arriving from the Canaries at the end of the ARC transatlantic rally. Restaurants, bars and shops line the water.
Reduit Beach, a long curve of pale sand with gentle water, is one of the best swimming beaches on the island. Villas and waterside townhouses here suit those who would rather stroll to a table than call a taxi, and families who want the beach close by.

Pigeon Island was a true island until a causeway joined it to the mainland in the early 1970s. Admiral Rodney built Fort Rodney here from 1778 to keep watch on the French fleet in Martinique, and the climb to Signal Peak, around 100 metres up, is short but steep, with views across to Martinique on a clear day. It is now a national landmark run by the Saint Lucia National Trust, with a small museum by the entrance.
Back on the mainland, Gros Islet village is a grid of narrow streets and painted wooden houses. On Friday nights Dauphin Street fills with grills, rum punch and soca for the street party, which locals and visitors share in roughly equal measure.

Cap Estate was once a sugar plantation covering the whole northern tip. Today it is the island's most sought-after residential district, with villas set on rolling hills between the Atlantic and the Caribbean, and an 18-hole golf course whose greens and tees were redesigned by Greg Norman's firm.
Over the hill, Cas-en-Bas is a deep bay on the Atlantic side, sheltered by an outer reef. The trade winds that blow from late autumn into early summer make it the north's kitesurfing beach, with two schools, a beach bar under the trees and horse rides along the sand. A car is useful up here, since the last stretch of road is rough.

Saint Lucian cooking is Creole at heart. The national dish is green fig and saltfish, the fig being green banana, and you will find accras, spiced saltfish fritters, at breakfast and at the Friday grills. Cocoa tea, thick and nutmeg-scented, is a morning ritual worth adopting.
The dry season runs from December to April, warm and breezy. The Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival brings its main stage to Pigeon Island around early May, and Carnival takes over in July. June to November is hurricane season, quieter and greener. Our concierge can arrange a private chef, a boat down the coast to the Pitons, kitesurfing lessons, tee times and transfers.
