Three fingers of land, and a great deal of clear water

Look at a map of northern Greece and Halkidiki is easy to spot: a broad hand of land reaching into the Aegean below Thessaloniki, with three long peninsulas spread like fingers. Kassandra is the liveliest of the three and Sithonia the greener and quieter. Athos, the third, belongs to the monks. Between them run hundreds of kilometres of coast, much of it pale sand edged with pine, and water clear enough to count the pebbles.

Our Halkidiki collection runs to 42 properties, most of them on Kassandra and around Nikiti at the head of Sithonia. They range from one-bedroom villas with their own pools to large sea-view apartments and beachfront houses, the biggest with 8 bedrooms, and many share a pool in quiet gardens above the shore.

Halkidiki has long been a summer favourite with Greeks themselves, which tells you something about the beaches and the tavernas. Here is how to choose your peninsula, and when to come.

Where to stay in Halkidiki

Kassandra for sandy beaches, lively villages and easy reach of the airport, Nikiti for a working village at the gateway to Sithonia, and southern Sithonia around Sarti for coves and views of Mount Athos.

Kassandra

The first finger, and the busiest

Kassandra is the peninsula closest to Thessaloniki, entered over the short canal at Nea Potidea. Its town, Kassandreia, sits inland, while the life of the place is on the coast: Hanioti and Pefkochori for evening promenades, Nea Fokea with its Byzantine tower above the harbour, and Paliouri on the southern tip, where the pine woods run almost to the water.

Afytos, a stone-built village on the cliffs of the east coast, is the place for dinner with a view across the gulf. Kassandra suits families, as the beaches shelve gently and the sea is usually calm, and a supermarket or a taverna is never far away.

Nikiti & Sithonia

Pine, granite and a slower pace

Nikiti stands at the northern entrance to Sithonia, an old village of stone houses on the hill with a newer seafront below it. It makes a sensible base: about an hour from the airport, with the whole peninsula ahead of you.

Sithonia is wilder than Kassandra, its coast broken into coves of granite and fine sand. Vourvourou has a lagoon dotted with islets, Neos Marmaras a busy harbour, and Porto Koufo, near the southern tip, a deep natural bay. On the east coast, between Armenistis and Sarti, the rock pools of Kavourotrypes are a favourite swim, and from Sarti the view across the water is filled by Mount Athos.

Mount Athos & Beyond

A holy mountain, seen from the sea

The third peninsula, Athos, is a self-governing monastic community and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with twenty monasteries on its slopes and the peak of Mount Athos rising to 2,033 metres. Only men with a special permit may go ashore, but anyone can take a boat from Ouranoupoli along the coast, past monasteries built at the very edge of the cliffs.

Inland, ancient Stagira was the birthplace of Aristotle, and the Petralona cave holds a famous prehistoric skull. Thessaloniki, with its Byzantine churches, waterfront and very good food, makes an easy day out on the way in or out.

Food & the Seasons

Green olives, mussels and a long, warm summer

Halkidiki gives its name to the large green olives served across Greece, and the groves still cover its hills. Tavernas by the water do grilled fish, mussels from the nearby Thermaic Gulf and plenty of local honey, and a glass of tsipouro tends to arrive before you have asked for it.

The sea is warmest from late June to September, when Greek families come in numbers and the villages are at their liveliest. May and October are quieter and still warm enough for swimming most days. Our concierge can arrange boat trips along the Athos coast, restaurant tables, car hire and transfers from Thessaloniki.

Why book your Halkidiki villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Halkidiki's peninsulas are long and the drives between them longer than they look, so we help you choose a base that suits the beaches and the pace you want. With 42 properties in Halkidiki, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Boat trips along the Mount Athos coast, restaurant tables in Afytos and Nikiti, car hire, day trips to Thessaloniki and transfers from Thessaloniki airport. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kassandra or Sithonia better for a villa holiday in Halkidiki?

Kassandra is livelier, closer to the airport and suits families who want sandy beaches and restaurants nearby. Sithonia is greener and quieter, with coves and pine woods. Nikiti, at the head of Sithonia, gives you good access to both.

Which airport serves Halkidiki?

Thessaloniki airport serves the whole region. Nikiti and Kassandreia are around an hour away by road, and the far south of Sithonia, around Sarti and Porto Koufo, takes closer to two hours. Our concierge can arrange private transfers.

Can women visit Mount Athos?
