Villas in Holetown

Where Barbados began, and where the west coast is at its best

Holetown is where English settlers came ashore in February 1627, and for a couple of years it was the only town on the island. Today it is the social heart of the west coast of Barbados: a small, walkable place of beach bars, good restaurants and smart shops, with the calm Caribbean lapping at one side of the main road and the old parish church standing at the northern end.

Our Holetown collection runs to 70+ properties. They range from large estate villas in and around Sandy Lane, some with up to 12 bedrooms, to sea-view apartments with shared pools, set a short stroll from the beach and the town.

Here is where to stay, what to see and when to come.

Sandy Lane

The address on the Platinum Coast

Just south of town, the Sandy Lane estate is the name most people associate with Barbados at its most polished. The estate's villas sit in mature tropical gardens behind the hotel and its crescent of beach, and many look over the fairways rather than the sea.

Golf here means three courses: the Green Monkey, carved from an old coral stone quarry, the Country Club and the Old Nine. Staying on the estate puts you a few minutes from the beach and the shops of Holetown, but with a good deal more peace and privacy.

The Town

A church, a festival and a very good dinner

St James Parish Church, founded in 1628, stands on what Bajans call God's Acre and has a bell cast in 1696. Next door, Folkestone Marine Park protects the reef, and snorkellers can swim out over coral. The wreck of the Stavronikita, sunk in 1976, lies further out for divers.

In town, Limegrove Lifestyle Centre has the luxury boutiques and the Chattel Village has the painted wooden shops. The restaurants along the shore make Holetown the place on the island to book dinner. Each February the Holetown Festival marks the 1627 landing with a week of parades, music and street food.

On the Water

Calm seas, turtles and a catamaran lunch

The west coast faces the Caribbean rather than the Atlantic, so the sea is usually calm and clear, which suits children and anyone who likes an early swim. A catamaran trip down the coast, stopping to snorkel with turtles, is the classic Barbados day out, and paddleboards and kayaks are easy to find on the beach.

For contrast, drive across the island to Bathsheba on the east coast. The Atlantic rollers and great boulders there feel a world away from Holetown, though they are barely an hour away.

Food & the Seasons

Flying fish, rum punch and a dry winter

The national dish is flying fish with cou-cou, a cornmeal and okra pudding. Fish cakes and a rum punch are the usual way to start the evening, and the Friday night fish fry at Oistins, on the south coast, is worth the drive.

The dry season runs from December to May, which is when most British visitors come, and Christmas and Easter book up early. June to November is quieter and greener, though it is also the hurricane season. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, tee times, catamaran trips and transfers.

Restaurant reservations in Holetown, tee times at Sandy Lane, catamaran trips to swim with turtles, diving at Folkestone, a private chef and transfers from Grantley Adams. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
