Tuscany's other coast: a port city, Etruscan shores and an island

Most visitors to Tuscany head inland, which leaves the coast of Livorno province largely to Italians who know better. It begins with Livorno itself, an unpretentious port city with canals and a fine seafront. Then it follows the cliffs of the Romito south to the long, pine-backed beaches of the Etruscan Coast, and carries on out to sea as far as Elba. Florence is under two hours away. The sea is a good deal closer.

Our collection here runs to 45 villas. There are houses on the cliffs above Calafuria with sea views and pools, country villas and farmhouses in the hills around Gabbro and Rosignano, and larger estates near Bibbona and Campiglia Marittima, including a castle. On Elba there are villas above the bays at Capoliveri and Bagnaia.

What follows is a guide to the coast, the island and the table.

Livorno & the Romito Coast

A working port with a very good seafront

The Medici built Livorno up in the late sixteenth century as Tuscany's free port, open to merchants of every faith. It still has the swagger of a trading city, not a postcard. Canals run through the Venezia Nuova quarter, the Fortezza Vecchia guards the harbour, and the city comes out to watch the sunset from the chequerboard promenade of the Terrazza Mascagni. Modigliani was born here in 1884.

South of town the coast road follows the Romito, passing the Medici watchtower at Calafuria and sandstone cliffs that drop into clear water. It continues to Castiglioncello, where the Macchiaioli painters spent their summers. Above the city, a funicular climbs to the hilltop sanctuary of Montenero.

The Etruscan Coast

Cypresses, great reds and tombs by the beach

South of Cecina the shore turns long and sandy, backed by umbrella pines, and the land behind rises into olive groves and vineyards. This is the Costa degli Etruschi. Bibbona sits on its hill above the plain. Next door is Bolgheri, reached by the avenue of cypresses that the poet Carducci made famous. It is also home to Sassicaia, Ornellaia and some of Italy's most sought-after reds.

Further south, Campiglia Marittima is a medieval hill town of steep lanes and stone arches. At the Gulf of Baratti, the Etruscans of Populonia buried their dead within sight of the beach. Inland, the hills around Gabbro and Rosignano are quiet country of oak woods and farmhouses, a short drive from the sea.

Elba

Granite peaks, quiet bays and an emperor in exile

Elba is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, about an hour by ferry from Piombino, and it fits a remarkable amount into a small space. Granite peaks rise to Monte Capanne at 1,019 metres, and the coast is a long run of sheltered bays, beaches and old iron workings. Napoleon spent around ten months here in exile from 1814, and his town residence, the Villa dei Mulini, still overlooks the harbour at Portoferraio.

Capoliveri, a hill village of narrow lanes in the south east, is the place for an evening drink in the piazza. Bagnaia, on the bay across from Portoferraio, is quieter and greener. Several of our Elba villas come with sea views.

Food & the Seasons

Cacciucco, chickpeas and a long summer

Livorno eats from the sea. Its great dish is cacciucco, a rich fish stew traditionally said to need at least five kinds of fish, one for each c in its name. The local snack is torta di ceci, a thin chickpea flatbread tucked into a roll. Finish with a ponce alla livornese, coffee laced with rum, which is said to descend from the punch of visiting English sailors.

June to September is beach season. In late July or early August, Effetto Venezia fills the canal quarter with free concerts and street food. May and late September are the best months for Elba and for walking, and the autumn harvest is a fine time to be in Bolgheri. Our concierge can arrange ferry crossings, winery visits, boat days and restaurant tables.
