A great harbour and a British legacy
Mahón, the capital, sits above one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, and the British rule of the 18th century left Georgian sash windows, a taste for gin and a fleet of boat trips around the harbour forts. The east coast has quiet coves and fishing villages such as Es Grau and Binibeca.

Ciutadella, the former capital, has a beautiful old town of palaces and a cathedral around a narrow harbour lined with restaurants. The south-west coast has some of the island's most famous coves, including Cala Macarella, Cala Mitjana and Cala Turqueta, reached on foot through the pines.

Prehistory and a path around the island
Inland, Menorca is a landscape of stone walls, farms and prehistoric monuments, and the Talayotic sites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Camí de Cavalls, an ancient path of around 185 kilometres, runs right around the coast, and Monte Toro, at the centre, gives views over the whole island.
