Trout rivers, deep snow and a great deal of sky

Montana calls itself Big Sky Country, and after a day out there the nickname stops sounding like a slogan. It is the fourth largest state in America and one of the least crowded: ranch land, trout rivers and the northern Rockies, with Glacier National Park in the north and Yellowstone on its southern edge.

We have 80+ homes in Montana. They range from cabins and ski chalets around Bozeman and Big Sky to family houses near Ennis on the Madison River, plus chalets in Whitefish and Bigfork up in the Flathead Valley. Many have hot tubs and fireplaces, and the largest sleep up to 32 guests.

Below you will find the two corners of the state where our houses are, what each does best and when to come.

Where to stay in Montana

Big Sky for big-mountain skiing, Bozeman and Bridger Canyon for a lively town with the slopes close by, Ennis for fly fishing on the Madison, and Whitefish and Bigfork for Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake.

Big Sky & Bozeman

A serious mountain and a lively college town

Big Sky Resort spreads across 5,850 acres on and around Lone Mountain, which makes it one of the largest ski areas in North America. The tram climbs to the summit of Lone Peak at 11,166 feet, around 3,403 metres, where the terrain is steep and well above the treeline. Even in high season the lift queues stay short.

Bozeman, about an hour north through Gallatin Canyon, is home to Montana State University and has good restaurants, a busy Main Street and the Museum of the Rockies, known for its dinosaur fossils. Our houses near Bridger Canyon are a short drive from Bridger Bowl, a community-run ski area that locals love for its ridge skiing.

Ennis & the Madison Valley

The Fifty Mile Riffle

Ennis is a small ranch town on the Madison River, and anglers know the river as the Fifty Mile Riffle. It holds brown and rainbow trout all the way from the dam at Hebgen Lake down past Ennis. Most guided days are float trips in a drift boat on the stretches above the town.

Downstream of Ennis Lake the river drops into Bear Trap Canyon. Experienced rafters tackle its whitewater, and there is a trail along the canyon for walkers. Big Sky is within reach for skiing in winter, and West Yellowstone, the gateway to the park, makes a good day out in summer.

Whitefish & Flathead Lake

A ski town at the edge of Glacier

Whitefish is a proper small town with a railway station, bars and restaurants, and Whitefish Mountain Resort is about fifteen minutes away on Big Mountain. It has more than 3,000 acres of terrain, a heavy snowfall and long views towards Glacier National Park. The park's west entrance is around 25 miles east of town.

To the south, Bigfork sits on Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and clear enough to see well down into the water on a calm summer day. In summer people come for boats, kayaks and swimming, and Wild Horse Island lives up to its name.

Seasons & the Table

Powder, huckleberries and the Sun Road

The ski season runs from December into April. January and February are the coldest months, and the snow is at its driest then. Summer has its own fixed date. The full length of Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier usually opens in late June or early July and stays open until the third Monday in October, weather permitting.

Montana eats well in a hearty way: bison and beef from the ranches, trout, Flathead cherries in high summer and wild huckleberries in late summer, which turn up in pies, ice cream and just about everything else. September is quieter and still warm, and the wildlife is busy. Our concierge can arrange guides, park tours and a chef for the house.

Why book your home in Montana with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Montana is enormous, and a Whitefish chalet and a Big Sky ski house are the better part of a day's drive apart, so we help you choose the right corner of the state first. With 80+ properties in Montana, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Fly fishing guides on the Madison, lift passes, guided days in Yellowstone and Glacier, boat hire on Flathead Lake, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Bozeman and Kalispell. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
