Harbour-view apartments and townhouses along Copenhagen's painted 17th-century canal
As featured in
Nyhavn means New Harbour, though it hasn't been new for a while. Swedish prisoners of war dug the canal in the 1670s on the orders of Christian V, to bring ships right up to Kongens Nytorv. For two centuries it was a quarter of sailors, alehouses and worse. Today the gabled houses in ochre, rust and blue are home to café tables, and old wooden ships still lie moored along the quay.
Our Nyhavn collection runs to 35 homes, most of them apartments with views over the water, alongside a few townhouses for families. They sit along the canal itself and in the streets towards Kastellet, Langelinie, Christianshavn and the newer waterfront at Nordhavn.
Here is how the neighbourhood fits together, and when to come.

The north side of Nyhavn is the sunny side, and the busy one: a long run of painted townhouses with restaurants spilling out onto the cobbles. The oldest, at No. 9, dates from 1681. Across the water, the grander south side runs up to Charlottenborg Palace, now an exhibition hall, on the corner of Kongens Nytorv.
Hans Christian Andersen lived here three times, at Nos. 20, 67 and 18. He wrote his first fairy tales at No. 20, and he died not long after leaving No. 18 in 1875. The inner stretch of the canal is a heritage harbour lined with veteran wooden ships, and the canal tours leave from here.

Walk north from the mouth of the canal and Copenhagen grows stately. Amalienborg, the royal residence, is a few minutes away, with the Changing of the Guard at noon. Beyond it lies Kastellet, a star-shaped fortress whose grassy ramparts make one of the best morning runs in the city.
The Little Mermaid sits on her rock off Langelinie, smaller than most visitors expect. Apartments along this stretch, towards Toldboden and Langelinie, tend to be calmer than those on the canal itself, with the harbour on the doorstep.

A footbridge from the end of Nyhavn crosses the harbour to Christianshavn, a district of narrow canals, houseboats and cafés built in the 17th century to a Dutch plan. Further out, Refshaleøen is a former shipyard turned over to street food, studios and summer evenings by the water.
To the north, Nordhavn is Copenhagen's newest waterfront quarter, connected to Kongens Nytorv by the M4 metro. Harbour buses link much of this, and Copenhageners swim in the harbour itself through the summer.
Explore Copenhagen
Lunch in Copenhagen means smørrebrød: open sandwiches on dark rye, topped with pickled herring, roast pork or shrimp, and nearly always followed by a cold beer or an aquavit. In the evenings, the city's restaurants are among the most talked about in Europe, and tables at the best of them go quickly.
Summer brings long, light evenings, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July and bonfires on Midsummer Eve, 23 June. In December the canal hosts a Christmas market, with gløgg and æbleskiver. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, private canal tours, guided walks and airport transfers.
