Georgian Bath, the Mendip Hills and the Levels, with cider orchards and a cathedral city in between
As featured in
Somerset covers a lot of England in one county. In the north is Bath, with its Roman baths and honey-coloured crescents. Below it lie the Mendip Hills, cut through by Cheddar Gorge. Further south and west come the flat, watery Somerset Levels, the Quantocks and the edge of Exmoor. There are orchards everywhere, and there is good cheese.
Our Somerset collection runs to 180+ properties. They range from city apartments and townhouses in Bath to stone cottages on the Mendip plateau, and from farmhouses on the Levels to large country houses for family gatherings, some with hot tubs and many with long views.
What follows is a short guide to the county, area by area.

Manor Orchard Bath: Luxurious 7-Bedroom Manor House with Immaculate Garden – Bath7 bedroomsBath for Georgian architecture, restaurants and the spa, the Mendip Hills for Cheddar Gorge, Wells and open walking country, and the Levels and Polden Hills around Cossington and Long Sutton for quiet villages and big skies.

Bath is the only city in Britain where the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Romans built their baths around its hot springs, and the Georgians built the Royal Crescent and the Circus above them. You can still bathe in the same water today, on the rooftop pool at Thermae Bath Spa.
An apartment or townhouse in the centre means you can walk everywhere: the Abbey, the Holburne Museum, the Jane Austen Centre and a good number of restaurants. Houses on the slopes around Prior Park and Bear Flat are quieter, have more space, and are still a short walk or drive from town.

The Mendips are a limestone plateau of drystone walls, sheep and wide skies. Priddy, high on the top, is a good base for walking. Below the plateau, Cheddar Gorge runs for nearly three miles between sheer cliffs, and the caves at Cheddar and Wookey Hole are worth an afternoon, particularly if it rains.
Wells, on the southern slopes, is often called England's smallest city. Its cathedral has one of the finest west fronts in the country, and the moated Bishop's Palace stands next to it. Go on a Wednesday or Saturday and there is a market in the square.

South of the Mendips the land flattens into the Somerset Levels. This is an area of rhynes, pollarded willows and wetland reserves, with Glastonbury Tor rising out of it. On winter evenings huge murmurations of starlings gather over the reserves around Ham Wall, and few sights in England are more extraordinary.
The Polden Hills make a low ridge across the Levels, and villages such as Cossington look out from them over the moors. Long Sutton, near Langport, is a quiet village of golden hamstone, and Glastonbury, the Quantocks and the Dorset border are all within an easy drive.

Somerset eats well. Cheddar cheese is still made by hand on farms in the county, and cider farms on the Levels will let you taste before you buy. Bruton, in the east, has become a destination in its own right, with Hauser & Wirth's gallery and The Newt's gardens close by.
Summer is the best time for walking and gardens, and in most years the Glastonbury Festival brings crowds to Pilton in late June. Bath's Christmas market runs from late November, and the illuminated carnivals tour the county's towns each November. Our concierge can book tables, spa sessions, cider tastings and transfers.

Bath is best for architecture, restaurants and the spa, and you will not need a car. The Mendip Hills suit walkers and families, with Cheddar and Wells close by. The Levels and Polden Hills are quieter and more rural.
Bristol Airport sits on the northern edge of the Mendip Hills and has flights from across the UK and Europe. Trains run from London Paddington to Bath in around an hour and a half, and the M5 runs through the west of the county.
