Pool villas in Phuket's quieter north, from Bang Tao and Layan to Nai Yang and the mangrove coast
As featured in
Most visitors to Phuket have never heard of Thalang, yet almost all of them land there. The district covers much of the north of the island, airport included. Thalang was also the old name for the whole island, and in 1785 two sisters rallied the islanders here against a Burmese siege. Thailand still honours them as national heroines.
Our Thalang collection runs to 50+ villas and suites. There are pool villas and suites within resorts at Layan and Nai Yang, and private villas of up to 9 bedrooms around Bang Tao and on the quieter east coast. You are rarely more than half an hour from the arrivals hall.
Below is a guide to the three corners of the district worth knowing, with notes on when to come.

Malaiwana Penthouse Thailand4 bedroomsChoeng Thale for Bang Tao, Laguna, Layan and Surin, Sakhu for Nai Yang and the national park beaches near the airport, and Pa Klok for the calm, mangrove-fringed east coast and boats to Phang Nga Bay.

Choeng Thale is the most cosmopolitan part of Thalang. Bang Tao Bay runs for several kilometres of pale sand, and behind it sits Laguna Phuket, a cluster of resorts, lagoons and a golf course built on land that was once a tin mine. Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket have the restaurants, bakeries and wine bars.
Layan, just to the north, is smaller and quieter, a crescent of beach backed by trees with a headland at either end. Surin, to the south, has finer sand and a smarter beach-club crowd. Families tend to favour Laguna. Couples often prefer the hush of Layan.

Nai Yang, in Sakhu, is the beach closest to the airport, and it shows: the jets pass low overhead, which small children find thrilling. The rest of the time it is an easy, unshowy place, with casuarina trees shading the sand and grilled fish served at simple tables along the shore.
The beach falls within Sirinat National Park, which stretches north to Mai Khao, the longest beach on the island and still one where sea turtles come ashore to nest. Blue Canyon Country Club is close by for golfers.

The east coast is a different Phuket altogether. You get mangroves and mudflats instead of surf, and a view across the water to the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. The beaches are no match for the west. The sunrises are better, and the sea is calm all year.
Pa Klok takes in the slender Cape Yamu peninsula and the piers at Ao Po and Bang Rong. From there, longtails and speedboats leave for James Bond Island, the sea caves of Phang Nga and the unhurried Ko Yao islands. This coast suits sailors and anyone who would rather wake to birdsong than beach music.

Inland Thalang is where the island's past survives. The Heroines Monument and the nearby Thalang National Museum tell the story of the 1785 siege. Each March a festival marks it, with an open-air re-enactment. Wat Phra Thong has a golden Buddha half buried in the earth. In the Khao Phra Thaeo forest, the Bang Pae waterfall sits beside a gibbon rehabilitation project.
For local food, try moo hong, pork braised slowly with black pepper, and Hokkien noodles. The dry season runs from November to April. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings showers and rougher seas to the west coast. Our concierge can arrange boat days, tee times, temple visits and restaurant tables.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Choeng Thale, around Bang Tao, Laguna, Layan and Surin, has the best beaches and the most restaurants. Sakhu suits those who want Nai Yang's easy pace close to the airport. Pa Klok, on the east coast, is quietest and best for boat trips into Phang Nga Bay.
November to April brings dry weather and calm seas, and December to February is the busiest stretch. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings showers and rougher water to the west coast, though the villas are quieter and the countryside is greener.
In the dry season the west coast beaches are usually calm and good for swimming. During the monsoon months strong currents are common, so watch for the red flags at Bang Tao, Surin and Nai Yang. The east coast is sheltered all year but shallow and muddy at low tide.
