Pastel houses, medieval walls and a monastery island
Tenby is the town everyone remembers: brightly painted houses above a small harbour, medieval walls still standing, and long sandy beaches on both sides. From the harbour, boats cross to Caldey Island, where Cistercian monks have long made chocolate and perfume.
Saundersfoot, just up the coast, is quieter, with a sheltered beach and a harbour once built for shipping coal. Beyond lies the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only national park in Britain that is mostly coastline, and its path runs around 186 miles past coves, cliffs and St Davids, Britain's smallest city. On New Year's Day, Saundersfoot's fancy-dress swim draws a brave crowd.

Britain's first protected landscape, beside the city
In 1956 the Gower became the first part of Britain to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it is easy to see why. Rhossili Bay curves for three miles beneath the downs, Worm's Head can be walked to at low tide, and Three Cliffs Bay is worth the scramble down.
Mumbles, at the start of the peninsula, has a Victorian pier, the ruins of Oystermouth Castle and a seafront made for an evening stroll with an ice cream. Swansea, Dylan Thomas's "ugly, lovely town", is ten minutes away for restaurants and the trains home.

Mountains, castles and sailing waters
The north is wilder. Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, rises to 1,085 metres, the highest peak in Wales, and the mountain railway from Llanberis does the climbing for you if you prefer. Edward I's castles at Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech and Beaumaris are together a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Llŷn Peninsula stretches west into the Irish Sea, with Abersoch for sailing and watersports and the old fishing hamlet of Porthdinllaen, where the pub sits on the sand. Portmeirion, the Italianate village near Porthmadog, is a pleasantly odd afternoon. Across the Menai Strait, Anglesey has a coast of quiet coves, with Rhoscolyn and Beaumaris among the loveliest corners.

Cockles, cawl and a festival calendar
Welsh food is better than its reputation. Look for salt-marsh lamb, Penclawdd cockles and laverbread from the Gower, Anglesey sea salt and a bowl of cawl on a cold day. The Abergavenny Food Festival in September is the great event of the year, and the Hay Festival brings writers to Hay-on-Wye each late spring.

How do I get to Wales?

Are Snowdonia and Eryri the same place?
Yes. Eryri is the Welsh name for Snowdonia, and the national park now uses it as its main name. Its highest mountain, Snowdon, is likewise known as Yr Wyddfa.
