Most visitors see Almada only as the far end of the 25 de Abril bridge, crowned by the outstretched arms of Cristo Rei. Lisboetas know better. On summer weekends they cross the river in their thousands for the long Atlantic beaches of Costa da Caparica, a plate of grilled fish in Cacilhas and the sea air under the fossil cliffs.

Herdade da Aroeira for golf, pine woods and Fonte da Telha beach, Charneca de Caparica for a quieter base, with Lisbon and Setúbal both within easy reach.
Pine woods, lakes and two courses
Herdade da Aroeira is a gated estate of around 350 hectares, planted with thousands of mature pines and dotted with lakes. Golf is its reason for being. The first course, laid out by Frank Pennink and opened in 1973, hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997. The second, by Donald Steel, followed in 2000 and plays around a series of lakes. Both now carry the PGA Aroeira name.
The estate also has a clubhouse, tennis courts and a few shops, and the Atlantic is only around 600 metres from its edge. It is about as close as championship golf and a beach lunch come to the centre of Lisbon.
Atlantic sand beneath the Fossil Cliff
South of the town of Costa da Caparica, a long run of sand stretches away towards Cabo Espichel. It is backed for much of its length by the Arriba Fóssil, a band of ancient, honey-coloured cliffs topped with pine and protected since 1971. The further south you go, the wider and emptier the beaches become.
In summer the Transpraia, a little open train, trundles from Costa da Caparica to Fonte da Telha, stopping at the beach bars along the way. The Atlantic here is cool and often lively, which suits surfers. Fonte da Telha, at the end of the line, is the beach nearest Aroeira.
A ten-minute ferry and the best view of the city
Cristo Rei, inaugurated in 1959, stands 110 metres tall on a clifftop above the river. A lift climbs the 82-metre pedestal to a viewing platform, and the view of the bridge and the whole of Lisbon is best at sunset.
Down by the water, the ferry from Cacilhas reaches Cais do Sodré in about ten minutes, which is a far more agreeable way into the city than the bridge at rush hour. Before you cross, the seafood restaurants along the Cacilhas waterfront have fed Lisboetas for generations, and the Casa da Cerca art centre in old Almada has a garden overlooking the Tagus.
Grilled fish, clams and a mild winter
The south bank eats simply and well: sardines and sea bream off the grill, clams cooked with garlic and coriander, and fish stew in the beach restaurants at Fonte da Telha. Lunch tends to run long.
June to September is beach season, when the Transpraia runs and the sand fills up at weekends. Spring and autumn are the best months for golf and walks along the cliff top, and the mild winters make Aroeira a sensible base for longer stays.
