Mae Nam is where people who know Koh Samui tend to end up. It lies on the north coast between Bang Por and Bophut, and its beach is the longest on that shore. The sand sits well back from the ring road, so the loudest thing in the afternoon is usually a longtail boat. Across the bay, Koh Phangan fills the horizon, and sunsets here are long and unhurried.

Mae Nam for a long, quiet beach and village life, Bophut next door for Fisherman's Village and its restaurants, and the rest of Koh Samui within an easy drive.
A Chinese shrine, a Thursday market and very few vendors
Mae Nam has kept the feel of a working village. There is a scattering of Thai temples, including Wat Na Phra Lan near the pier, and a brightly painted Chinese temple close to the beach, which is where the community gathers.
On Thursday evenings the lanes around it become the Walking Street, a night market of grilled skewers, cheap cocktails, local bands and the odd tray of fried insects for the brave. It is smaller than the Friday market at Bophut, and much more relaxed for it.
By day, the beach is the attraction. Reviewers often say it has more sand per person than Samui's busier strands, and the hawkers are fewer too.

Fisherman's Village, ten minutes east
The north coast offers a neat compromise. You sleep in Mae Nam and drive a few minutes east when you want more going on. Bophut's Fisherman's Village has old wooden shophouses, seafront restaurants and a lively Friday night market. A little further on, the Big Buddha at Bang Rak and the temple at Plai Laem sit around nine kilometres from Mae Nam.
Golfers have the Santiburi course in Mae Nam itself, laid out in the hills with views over the bay. Chaweng, the island's busiest resort, is close enough for an evening out but far enough away that you won't hear it.

Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and the marine park
Mae Nam has a practical advantage: its own pier, where the Lomprayah catamarans leave for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. That makes a day on a neighbouring island an easy thing to arrange. Koh Phangan has much more to it than the Full Moon Party, including quiet bays and jungle walks, and Koh Tao is known for diving and snorkelling.
Closer to home, boat trips run to Ang Thong Marine National Park, a scatter of limestone islands west of Samui with lagoons, kayaking and viewpoints. We can charter a private boat so you set the pace yourselves.
Southern curries and a back-to-front monsoon
Samui grew rich on coconuts long before tourism arrived, and you can still taste it in the cooking. Southern Thai curries are hotter and more fragrant than the Bangkok versions, and the fish is grilled on the beach in the evening. At the Thursday market, a plate of pad thai and a fresh coconut cost very little.
The weather here does not follow the rest of Thailand. The heaviest rain usually comes from October to December, January to April is dry and bright, and July and August are generally kind, which is good news for the school holidays.
