Apartments in the old market quarter, between the opera house, the theatres and Seven Dials
As featured in
The name comes from a real garden. This was the walled kitchen garden of the monks of Westminster Abbey, and in the 1630s Inigo Jones laid out London's first planned square here for the Earl of Bedford. Fruit, vegetables and flowers were sold in the Piazza for around three centuries, until the wholesale market moved to Nine Elms in 1974. The market hall stayed, and the neighbourhood moved on to opera, theatre and long dinners.
Our Covent Garden collection runs to 50+ apartments, from neat one-bedroom flats on the quiet lanes off Bedford Street to family apartments near Seven Dials and penthouses with views over the rooftops. Some have terraces, lifts or parking, which are rare enough in this part of London to be worth asking about.
Here is how the neighbourhood fits together, and when it is at its best.

The Piazza is where the story begins. St Paul's Church, also by Inigo Jones, is known as the actors' church, with memorials to generations of performers inside. Shaw opened Pygmalion under its portico, and a plaque on the wall records the day in May 1662 when Samuel Pepys watched an Italian puppet play here. That is the first written mention of what became Punch and Judy.
Charles Fowler's market hall from 1830 now holds shops, cafés and the Apple Market stalls, and street performers work the crowd in the West Piazza. The London Transport Museum, in the old flower market, is a reliable way to keep children happy on a wet afternoon.

North of the Piazza, Thomas Neale laid out Seven Dials in the 1690s, with seven streets meeting at a sundial pillar. The pillar you see now is a replacement put up in 1989. These days the streets are full of independent shops, good coffee and small restaurants. Neal Street leads down towards the market, and Neal's Yard is a tiny courtyard of brightly painted shopfronts.
Apartments around here tend to suit people who like to wander. Soho is just across Charing Cross Road, so you can walk to dinner on Dean Street or Greek Street in minutes.

The Royal Opera House, home of The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, faces the Piazza on Bow Street. A theatre has stood on the Theatre Royal Drury Lane site since 1663, and the Lyceum, the Adelphi and the Strand's other theatres are all close. When home is around the corner, you can skip the taxi queue after the final curtain.
By day, Somerset House on the Strand holds the Courtauld Gallery and its Impressionists. Towards Holborn, Sir John Soane's Museum on Lincoln's Inn Fields is one of the oddest and most rewarding houses in London.

Rules on Maiden Lane has been serving game and puddings since 1798, and it calls itself London's oldest restaurant. Around it you'll find early-evening set menus for the theatre crowd, oyster bars and late suppers after the show.
The May Fayre and Puppet Festival is held on the second Sunday in May, with a brass band procession, a service in St Paul's with Mr Punch in the pulpit and Punch and Judy shows in the churchyard. Summer evenings are long and lively. At Christmas the Piazza puts up its decorations and a large tree, and there is usually ice skating in the courtyard at Somerset House. Our concierge can book tickets, tables and transfers.

Stay near the Piazza and Bedford Street to be closest to the opera house and theatres. Seven Dials is better for shops and smaller restaurants. Drury Lane and the streets towards Holborn are a little calmer but still only a short walk from everything.
Any time of year works, since the theatres and restaurants are open all year. In May there is the May Fayre and Puppet Festival, summer brings long evenings in the Piazza, and December has the Christmas decorations and skating at nearby Somerset House.
