Barcelona's grand grid, and the best address for Modernisme

In the late 1850s the engineer Ildefons Cerdà laid a grid of wide streets over the open ground between the old walled city and the village of Gràcia. Its corners were cut off at an angle to let in light and air. The new middle classes of Barcelona moved in, and they hired Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch to make their houses as showy as possible. The result is Eixample, the most elegant district in the city and the easiest to live in.

Our Eixample collection runs to 80+ apartments. They range from two-bedroom flats with balconies over the plane trees to penthouses whose upper floors look towards the sea, and large family apartments in period buildings with up to 7 bedrooms.

Here is how the district works, where to base yourself and when to come.

The Grid

Cut corners and long views

Eixample is easy to understand once you have walked a block or two. The streets run in a regular pattern, and each crossroads opens into a small octagonal square formed by the cut corners, which the Catalans call xamfrans. It feels spacious in a way old European city centres rarely do.

In recent years the city has turned parts of Consell de Cent and neighbouring streets into green, largely traffic-free axes, with benches, planting and café tables where cars used to queue. Plaça de Catalunya, at the district's southern edge, brings the Gothic Quarter and El Raval within a short stroll.

Modernisme

A street museum of Catalan architecture

On one short stretch of Passeig de Gràcia stand Casa Lleó Morera, Casa Amatller and Gaudí's Casa Batlló, three architects competing on a single block that locals nicknamed the Illa de la Discòrdia. A few minutes further up is Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera, with its rippling stone front and chimney-studded roof.

At the eastern end of the district, the Sagrada Família reached its full height in 2026, when the central Tower of Jesus Christ was topped out at 172.5 metres. That makes it the tallest church in the world. Domènech i Montaner's Hospital de Sant Pau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short walk up Avinguda de Gaudí and much quieter.

Dreta & Esquerra

Two halves with different tempers

Eixample is split by Carrer de Balmes into the Dreta, on the right, and the Esquerra, on the left. The Dreta is the grander half, with Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya and the city's smartest shops and hotels.

The Esquerra feels more like a neighbourhood. Carrer d'Enric Granados has café terraces under the trees, and the restored Mercat de Sant Antoni hosts a book market on Sunday mornings. Northwards, Eixample merges into Gràcia, whose small squares and independent bars make a good contrast to the boulevards. Our concierge can suggest which side of Balmes suits your party.

Food & the Seasons

Vermouth at noon, dinner at ten

Eixample is one of the best places in Barcelona to eat. There are serious restaurants on the grand avenues and old-fashioned bars for a Sunday vermouth and anchovies. Market halls such as Sant Antoni and the Concepció sell everything you might want for a long lunch at the apartment, starting with tomatoes for pa amb tomàquet.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. On Sant Jordi, 23 April, Passeig de Gràcia fills with stalls selling books and roses. La Mercè, the city's great festival, comes in late September. July and August are hot and busy, while winter brings calçots, grilled spring onions, to the menus. Our concierge can book tables, guides and timed tickets.

Why book your apartment in Eixample with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Eixample covers a large area, and we know which buildings are quiet at night, which have lifts and terraces, and which are a short walk from Passeig de Gràcia or the markets. With 80+ properties in Eixample, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Timed tickets for the Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló, private architecture guides, restaurant reservations, a private chef, day trips to Sitges and the Penedès vineyards, and transfers from El Prat. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which part of Eixample is best for an apartment holiday?

For the Modernista houses, smart shopping and the shortest walk to the old city, choose Dreta de l'Eixample around Passeig de Gràcia. The Esquerra and Sant Antoni are more local, with markets and café terraces. The streets near the Sagrada Família tend to be quieter and offer more space.

When is the best time to visit Eixample?

May, June, September and October are warm without the heat and crowds of high summer. Sant Jordi on 23 April and La Mercè in late September are both lovely times to be in the city, though you will need to book early.

Is the Sagrada Família finished?

Not quite. The central Tower of Jesus Christ was topped out in February 2026, which made it the tallest church in the world at 172.5 metres. Work continues on the interior of the tower and on the Glory façade, so you will still see cranes for some years yet.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in Eixample?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in Eixample cost?

Across our 80+ properties in Eixample, weekly rates typically range from £3,000 to £4,500, with the most affordable from around £2,400 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Eixample from the airport?

Barcelona El Prat airport is usually around 30 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. The Aerobus runs to Plaça de Catalunya, on the edge of the district. Our concierge can arrange a private transfer straight to your door.

Are there apartments in Eixample for large groups?

Yes. Our Eixample collection includes properties with up to 7 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
